Hi everyone, I was wondering if you could give a fellow conservative some advice on moving to Texas. I am currently living in Chicago, and I am fed up with the taxes, cold weather, Democratic culture and bad economy here. I am seriously considering a move to Texas, I am fairly young, 26, and I am almost done with my degree in marketing, although I currently posses a B.A. in journalism. I think Texas sounds really cool and I just wanted to get advice from fellow FReepers who have either made the move from other states to Texas or FReepers who currently live there.
Some of my questions are: 1. Do you like Texas better than your former state or why do you think Texas is second to none? 2. Out of the two cities there: Dallas and Houston, which one is the better one to live in? (Basically I want the city that least resembles Chicago, but is fun to live in and doesn’t end up costing me an arm and a leg in rent and taxes) 3. How’s the economic climate in Texas? I know we’re in the midst of a recession but what’s the unemployment rate etc.
Those are just some sample questions feel free to tell me about your move or whatever other advice you can give if you can. Thanks for responding to my thread, God Bless. -Eric

2. DFW metro is decent. You might look as far as Tyler (east) to Weatherford (west) and Frisco (north) to Burleson (south). Weather is a lot less muggy than Houston. You get more trees and greenery in the east; more hills as you go south towards the hill country region.
3. Economic stability is strong in Texas. TX never saw the housing boom in full effect like FL, CA, and AZ. Dairy farmers are hurting now, natural gas is coming down from a big boom on the Barnett Shale. I hear about folks getting new jobs and homes are selling.
4. To help make your decision, visit a number of places - spend a week or two visiting the different cities and regions. You might find that you like one of the smaller towns in Texas....some of the best kept secrets in America.
That’s why I want him to lose in the primary. He won’t lose to the demonrat.
If he loses in the primary, that means we either have a real RINO, KBH, or a Paultard amateur Ventura type in Medina.
Neither are a good thought for our State.
Paultard amateur has the best platform of the bunch. Nevertheless, more importantly, it will keep the “Romney in Shitkickers” off of the national stage.
To back up something that HonkeyTonkMan said, if you head outside of the major DFW Metro areas, to Tyler for example, your cost of living drops dramatically. For example, a $250k home in Dallas proper would run about $175k in Tyler and $150k in some of the smaller towns around there like Lindale.
Austin is a liberal cesspool, worse than Chicago.
Look up how her platform has become more populist as she has run and ask yourself if it is her real beliefs or ‘massaged’ for the masses. Especially on border security- something I know is crucial to you.

After having pushed hard for Dallas...I think you really need to check out Austin if you like Chicago....it has a lot of culture and appeals to the younger crowd...a great place to go to college if you are thinking of furthering your education any.
If you choose the DFW area then McKinney/Plano/Frisco/Allen are great places to live and raise a family. Stay away from Garland and Mesquite. Ausin is a great place to live if you are single. San Antonio is getting too crowded and the traffic can be a nightmare because of all the new development and road construction. It’s also unbearably hot in July-Sept. The Hill Country is a great place to visit. Lots of wineries, river rafting, etc. You are more than welcome to come here to live. Just don’t bring any liberal friends and/or family.

I lived in Dallas for 20 years, however I did a lot of business in Houston. I concur with your Dallas assessment of being clannish i.e. snobbish. I now live near the Red River outside a small town and love it. That being said the best "big" town I ever lived in was Oklahoma City....much like Houston great people without the traffic. Actually Fort Worth is like Houston and OKC.... Tulsa is to OKC as Dallas is to Fort Worth if that makes any sense.
Think Frisco. Or Forney.
A smaller town right outside of Dallas, its a country-suburban atmosphere without big city worries.

Yeah, please leave your lib friends in Chi town! San Antonio’s traffic is definitely horrendous (have an office there, too). Austin is great for singles, but so is Houston area. Besides that, you can make your money in Houston and travel to the Hill Country within an hour or two for a weekend road trip!
I don’t know about humid but you can smell and see the refinery smog in Houston. :)
One thing’s for sure. Texans sure do like to brag about our state. That’s a good “thang”!!
