Hi everyone, I was wondering if you could give a fellow conservative some advice on moving to Texas. I am currently living in Chicago, and I am fed up with the taxes, cold weather, Democratic culture and bad economy here. I am seriously considering a move to Texas, I am fairly young, 26, and I am almost done with my degree in marketing, although I currently posses a B.A. in journalism. I think Texas sounds really cool and I just wanted to get advice from fellow FReepers who have either made the move from other states to Texas or FReepers who currently live there.
Some of my questions are: 1. Do you like Texas better than your former state or why do you think Texas is second to none? 2. Out of the two cities there: Dallas and Houston, which one is the better one to live in? (Basically I want the city that least resembles Chicago, but is fun to live in and doesnt end up costing me an arm and a leg in rent and taxes) 3. Hows the economic climate in Texas? I know were in the midst of a recession but whats the unemployment rate etc.
Those are just some sample questions feel free to tell me about your move or whatever other advice you can give if you can. Thanks for responding to my thread, God Bless. -Eric
I would vote San Antonio, too. I’ve not lived in Dallas but if I were to move to the Houston area (I grew up there)... I would go to the northwest ‘bout 30 miles out (Spring or the Woodlands) or to the southwest ‘bout 20 miles out (Sugar Land).
San Antonio is a bit more affordable than Houston, Dallas and certainly Austin. I love Texas but we do seem to have a bit of an attitude. The most friendly place I’ve ever lived was coastal South Carolina.
One more thing ... no blizzards or shoveling any of that white stuff.
Sure as long as you are buying! LOL
Pissant - Rick Perry running for President is almost as ridiculous as Ron Paul running for President!
Hey to you too, neighbor. McKinney here too.
pissant....living in that socialist shithole you live in how is it that you have a dog in this fight?
Texas is in the best shape of any state in this nation and the legislature and Governor Perry is the reason we have billions in the bank. Who in their right mind could find fault with that scenario? You need to spend your time worrying about Washington and us Texan’s will take care of our state.
San Antonio is liberal, but in a Hispanic sort of way with good surrounding towns.
Hunh? Maybe the city council, but the population is generally conservative, with lots of active and retired (and reserve and Guard) military. It’s a great place if you can stay away from retaining walls.

You buyin' the first round? :o)
I went to basic training in San Antonio but there are some nice areas there.
BWAHAHAHA!!! Quite a disclaimer!

One more thing, I have found in general mexicans in San Antonio do not like whites and will let you know it.
Man - I can’t believe we live in the same town. That’s virtually never been my experience in the 37 years I’ve lived here.

So you can smell and see the refinery smog? It’s called money and jobs. Get some nose plugs!
And wind. And that certain unmistakable aroma...of course, when my wife and I were stationed at Cannon AFB, we used to go to Lubbock to have a GOOD time. Never would have thought so...

I live just outside of the metro area of Sam Rayburn’s home...
Re rebuilding in Galveston. It’s slow and spotty. Strand is pretty much up and running and the road is now all there from Galveston south with no huge sinkholes remaining. You don’t really notice how much is gone if you weren’t here a lot before but to frequent visitors it is pretty sad. Lots of areas just totally vacant and some third tier homes are now first tier. Also some of the areas which have been rebuilt by out-of-towners are such wild un-Galveston colors - like they had a sale on 150 different kinds of paint but only one can of each was available. Has always been and will always be a battle over old and new money and no agreement on exactly what Galveston should be and how it should look. But we still love it and go every week.
Allen, TX here.
Being from New York you certainly have a lot of opinions of the cities in Texas....how is that living in the socialist shithole that you call home??...
Heard it said that because of the mosquitos, only people who go to the beach at night are Yankees and those interested in witch craft.
That was interesting and funny. I hope the island comes back all the way. No big hissy fits like New Orleans either.
God’s Country.... c’mon down!
lol! true
