Big Snow Event on the Way New Mexico-Virginia
Doppler Dale's Weather Post ^ | 01/28/10 | Dale Bader

***Added a comment based on a look at the new BAMS 3KM Model run see below in (*)*** Confidence is on the high side that a major snow event is ready to take place from the Panhandles of Texas to Virginia. A wide swath of 6 to 12 inches will be expected with some spots may see up to 18 inches. The heaviest is expected across the Panhandles of Texas/Oklahoma, northern Arkansas/southern Missouri and the mountains of Virginia/North Carolina and southeastern Kentucky. Still have questions has to how far south icing problems will be a concern. Could it make it as far south as U.S. 72 in Alabama and U. S. 278 in Mississippi? Maybe. I know that doesn’t help out much but confidence on southern boundary of icing remains tough to pin down as of now.

Dale, will there be any snow left by the time it gets to VA? What is your best guess for the DC metro area-Northern Virginia?

East central NM here, snowing since last night. About 8” down and likely another 6-10” before it ends.

Also heard from a FReeper in the panhandle, they got about a foot.

Fortunately they are like Buffalo is for snow: half the population of DC is employed in plowing and shoveling the BS.

Looks as if it should miss North Georgia, but if it gets The Smoky Mountains, it may well end up here, too. I hate cold weather.

Take a look at the “source” for my post and look at the “width=” designation.... that’s how you do it... :-)

Sometimes I use 600 or 800 or 1000 for the width. I wouldn’t use the width designation if the picture will naturally not be that big, though...

Absolutely. Some of the heaviest will occur in southern VA. For the DC area, 2-4” is likely, maybe more if the low tracks further north.

Thanks. As a conscientious DC Metro resident, I will run out tomorrow and stock up on milk, bread and TP, despite the fact that I already have plenty. It is one of our quaint cultural traditions here.
