Narcissists are high maintenance creatures with little hope of changing. The personality disorder is baked into them. Barack Obama shows the thin skinned nature of the narcissist in his responses to criticism.
Narcissists also have no intestinal fortitude for ridicule. Not only does Barack Obama lash out at critics, he is entirely devoid of the kind of self deprecating humor that can be so endearing in people in power.
Obama’s mentor, Saul Alinsky understood the use of ridicule as a weapon: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule.” (Rules for Radicals, Pg. 128).
Early in his presidency, Obama chose Rush Limbaugh as his target of choice. The mission is to get the enemy to react, which gives the revolutionary a measure of power and control over the prey. Alinsky doesn’t address this directly, but it would seem prudent to avoid selecting targets that are smarter than you are. Limbaugh deftly and entirely predictably turned Obama’s provocation into a ratings bonanza.

I read all this and more when I was trying to understand my sil..she is hell on wheels and an alcholic in the bargain. Lovely to be around..not. So to keep in touch with my brother, I write to him or email but hardly ever call on the phone and have not been back to TX in 10 years.
If a narcissist is in your family you have to make decisions and sometimes cutting them out is the best thing you can do for your own survival.
It is very easy to "break" a narcissist – even a well-trained and well-prepared one.
Here are a few of the things the narcissist finds devastating:
Any statement or fact, which seems to contradict his inflated perception of his grandiose self.
Any criticism, disagreement, exposure of fake achievements, belittling of "talents and skills" which the narcissist fantasises that he possesses.
Any hint that he is subordinated, subjugated, controlled, owned or dependent upon a third party.
Any description of the narcissist as average and common, indistinguishable from many others.
Any hint that the narcissist is weak, needy, dependent, deficient, slow, not intelligent, naive, gullible, susceptible, not in the know, manipulated, a victim, an average person of mediocre accomplishments.
The narcissist is likely to react with rage to all these and, in an effort to re-establish his fantastic grandiosity, he is likely to expose facts and stratagems he had no conscious intention of exposing.
The narcissist reacts indignantly, with wrath, hatred, aggression, or even overt violence to any infringement of what he perceives to be his natural entitlement.
Narcissists believe that they are so unique and that their lives are of such cosmic significance that others should defer to their needs and cater to their every whim without ado. The narcissist feels entitled to interact or be treated (or questioned) only by unique individuals. He resents being doubted and "ridiculed".
Any insinuation, hint, intimation, or direct declaration that the narcissist is not special at all, that he is average, common, not even sufficiently idiosyncratic to warrant a fleeting interest inflame the narcissist.
My son just divorced & got full custody of his kids, from an alcholic/narcissist. They infect the entire family, no one is spared their rath, lies, manipulations, it's 24/7 drama with them. There is no cure, no hope for them. They are right and everyone else is WRONG! Run, run fast if you think you're involved with one!!!

Same thing with Ronald Reagan!!! I remember one of his quips at himself (and actually the brilliance of it was to disarm the rabid liberals & lefties & media who tried to get the best of Reagan and NEVER could)....anyway it was in relation to the media & lefties criticizing Reagan for supposedly dozing off in afternoon meetings. Reagan said, "In the event of an emergency, I have given strict orders to be woken up, even if it is in the midst of Cabinet meetings". Classic line of humor by Reagan.
And the liberals & lefties & media sputtered & fumed, but they never counteract or get the better of Ronald Reagan who could disarm their barbs & arrows & hatred with a simple classic self-deprecating humor!!!

It is incredible, you just described my wife to a tee. We have been separated for 3 years since May 2007, I am trying to decide what to do next (my 3 kids are fortunately 25, 23 & 20 yrs old) and EVERYTHING, I mean EVERYTHING, is a 24/7 drama with her. The last volcanic explosion from her was when I had the oil changed on my daughter's car, after taking her to work & picking her up, and my wife felt that I did not EXPRESSLY ask my daughter's permission to do this...Huh? Volcanic eruption #4,732 I think. I gotta move on, irregardless of losing 1/2 my investments & home. Life with her is a bitch!!! Plus narcissistic people are incredibly emotionally abusive, manipulative & controlling. Her father was a dead ringer narcissistic, manipulative, abusive, controlling demon as well.

I was guardian of a malignantly narcissistic child. I raised her from ages 1-17. Her narcissism was apparent almost from her first word - unbelievable self-love, disregard for and abuse of everyone else. She nearly did me in.
Forgot to add, at age 20, she has learned not one thing! She continues to victimize and abuse everyone she meets.
