Potential LeT Hang Glider Attack has Precedent

SNIPPET: "India is on heightened alert for new terrorist attacks by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Among the concerns, the Times of India reported, is that the LeT has acquired more than 50 hang-gliders, possibly for use in an air-borne terrorist attack."

SNIPPET: "The use of hang-gliders by terrorist groups, although sounding like something out of a James Bond film, is not completely unheard of. On November 15, 1987, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine—General Command undertook a similar attack aimed at Israel. The attack, known as the "night of the gliders" was undertaken by two PFLP-GC guerrillas with AK-47 assault rifles, pistols, and hand grenades. The attackers hit at the Gibor army camp near Kiryat Shmona and resulted in the deaths of six soldiers and the wounding of many others."

I’ve logged almost 4000 hours in hang gliders. You have to have a high spot to start from, or a tow to get you aloft, unless it’s somehow powered. In any event, hang gliders are very slow moving, are easily seen by radar and pretty much would be a sitting duck for someone with a shot gun in a J-3 Cub, much less a military helicopter or fighter jet.

“Do you intentionally search for this nonsense?”

Thank you for your question and I’m sure you want a serious answer.

The jihad is global — that includes inside and outside the U.S.A.
The internet unites the global jihad and they feed off each other and
use each others ideas.

Since September 11, 2001; I monitor the internet and post what jihadis
are thinking about and update the readers on FR regarding the wot/gwot.

I have been on FreeRepublic.com as a lurker since 1998, changed my moniker and reregistered about 2000 and I am an active poster.

I agree.

I know other terrorist groups over the years have looked more at drones and radio controlled model planes rather than hang gliders.

It is interesting that there was an alleged purchase of 50 hang gliders by LET.
I’ll update this thread if there is more info.

I think they are referring to microlights, rather than unpowered hang-gliders.

Probably correct. The author is more than likely referring to powered "trikes", as opposed to a foot launched hang glider. This happens a lot in the press. Same thing with paragliders and powered paragliders, even though they aren't remotely associated with hang gliders in design. Although trikes were developed from hang gliders and share a common history, they are quite different and, in most cases, are not interchangeable. IOW, no one foot launches a trike wing (way too heavy) and a typical hang glider is not designed or built with the intention of being capable of powered flight. A trike would still be a sitting duck, though......
