For around a decade in the 1970s and early 80s, 30 Chileans who had studied under the University of Chicago's Milton Friedman transformed their economy. Later known as the "Chicago boys," these economists instituted policies of free trade, stable monetary policies, and deregulating the markets. The Chicago Boys Privatized Social security and Medical Care in 1980.. It works....
The only one around who is still very healthy is Luis Escobar Cerda. He 82, still plays tennis 3 or 4 days a week and snow skis 40 to 50 days each year.
Who would like to met him?
Who hired the Chicago boys?
General Pinochet.
General Pinochet, the only dictator EVER to be VOTED out of office! (1992)
“Who hired the Chicago boys?
General Pinochet.”
EXACTLY - Chile had the chance to follow Castro in the 70s, but Pinochet knew where that would lead. He is one of my greatest heroes of all time.
Not really accurate. The actual architect (and the "continuing Guru") of Chilean social security reform was Jose Pinera, who received both his M.A. and his Ph.D. in economics from HARVARD. You can look it up:

Moreover, Jose's baby brother Sebastian, who was just elected President of Chile, also received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard!
(That being said, it's certainly correct that the Chicago economists appointed by Pinochet deserve at least 50% of the credit for Chile's overall economic success. And not only that: Jose Pinera's undergraduate education was at the Catholic University of Chile's Chicago-dominated Economics Department.)
