I have cried as I’ve watched the graphic images coming out of Haiti. Watching a mother cry out in anguish because she’s lost five children broke my heart. The thought of losing a child is more than I can bear. I can only imagine the grief she must be experiencing. Hearing that residents of a nursing home are laying in the streets without food or water while the supplies are only a half mile away at the airport seems unthinkable to me. A 22 year old female missionary from Washington was found buried under the rubble. She was there helping disabled orphans. Last night’s latest statistic was 200,000 are dead and 1.5 million are homeless. Those statistics are overwhelming because they aren’t just statistics, they are people. Parents have lost children. Brothers have lost sisters. Churches have lost pastors. These people will never be the same. Their lives are changed forever.

none, but I adopted two orphans from another hellhole 3rd world country, one with a culture I can at least have some respect for

I worked with several in the 80s. They were really nice, hard-working guys. I have always wondered why the Bahamas seem to prosper but not Haiti.

The article was addressing the fact that we take the abundance we enjoy here in this country for granted. And as long as we fail to be thankful for our blessings, true happiness will elude us.
I have lived both in the impoverished Third World and in one of the wealthiest countries in Europe. Guess where the people seemed to be the happiest and most content - despite their economic hardships?

I can’t speak for “Weepy” but would like to comment regarding the smug arrogance of those towards others who have not had any of the wonderful opportunities available to us.
Most of us fail to realize that we truly are children of privilege - living in the United States, enjoying a standard of living that exceeds 95% of the rest of the world. And we must not deceive ourselves and take full credit for the good things we enjoy. We have been the beneficiary of opportunities that most of the rest of the world would give an arm and a leg for. And we smugly look down our noses at the poor, remarking that if only they worked as hard as we have, they wouldn’t be in that situation. As someone who has lived in a third world country, I have seen many people who work as hard or harder than those in the affluent West. The problem is they are trapped in societies where it is virtually impossible to prosper.
But the funny thing is that, in my experience, people in poorer lands appear to be more content, and seem to adjust better to life’s circumstances. I wonder how many of us would react if we suddenly lost everything (with no FEMA, insurance, etc. to assist us)?
The point of the excellent article was perfectly valid: that our lives have become so “soft” that we often do not appreciate the abundance that we enjoy, and our capacity to empathize with those in need is sadly diminished.

LOL is that the best response you can muster? If you fly off the handle like that at the least hint of criticism, I’d hate to be anywhere near you when the real storm hits.
