Type Of Pistol

Posted on 01/11/2010 8:43:57 PM PST by Rose Commander

Hi, everybody. I got a question. I am in the market for a new pistol. I was recommended a Hi-Point .45 ACP pistol for a home defense weapon. I am curious as what do you all recommend. Please state a pistol that is at least a .40 or larger and it is $400 or less.

Thank you.

The nice thing about FR is it's a great resource if you want to learn about firearms.

There's many great suggestions in this thread. A 12-gauge pump shotgun, like a Mossberg 500 (I have one), a Remington 870 or a Winchester Model 12 is always a good choice and you can get them used for under $400. I have a Ruger P95 in 9mm that I bought for $350 - it's a decent gun for the money.

I suggest you go to a gun range that rents weapons of different calibers and see with what you are most comfortable. If I had the money, I would do like several folks suggested and get the Kimber .45 ACP.

My two cents.

Yuk.

For under $400, find a used Glock 17 or 19.

I live in an apartment and I have a Mossberg 500 12 guage shotgun with a pistol grip. All of the shot will remain within my walls of my apartment. You also do not have to be so careful with your aim.I also have pistols but the ammo for the pistol would go through many neighbor walls. Apartments are like a lots of homes in where you can reach out your window and touch your neighbor’s house. Another nice thing about this shotgun or any pump shotgun is the noise it makes when you jack one in to the pipe. Makes a perp think twice before proceeding any further.

Home Defense? Get a shotgun. Pistols are for personal and vehicular protection where you can’t carry a shotgun.

Hard to beat a Glock for the money, but should should plan to spend more like $500 to $600 for a new gun. The Springfield XD is also a good choice.

If it's going to be a home defense gun and you don't have the option of open carry in your state, consider going with the classic 1911.

Isn’t that a bit more than $400? Also, it is important to use frangible ammunition to avoid killing your neighbors.

I agree, get the shortest legal barrel (about 18”). Number 5 shot would probably work pretty well. Very deadly, up close, but probably safe enough after going through walls.

Hi-Points aren't pretty, but for the money they ain't bad.

Lifetime Warranty and they never jam or stovepipe, unlike my friends Glock. That being said, if you need 100% performance, get a Revolver. I really like my Smith & Wesson Model 29, 44 Mag.

I hope your walls both interior and exterior are make of 1/4 inch steel, blasting around a house with a 45 is asking for trouble, get a 22 pistol and learn to hit what you are shooting at.

You don’t think the Barret would turn them into an amputee and end any discussion?. LOL

assuming you can shoulder an almost 40lb rifle, hit what you're aiming at, and manage to not hit anyone in every house that the bullet passes thru for the next 2 counties.
