Phones Take Center Stage at CES!

A slew of Android smartphones in all shapes and sizes invaded the showfloor at CES 2010. I found three good user video reviews of the Motorola Android, Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica and Lenovo Lephone. They help but yet I'm still overwhelmed by the variety and options available. If anybody has any "favorites" please post them!

I’m wondering if the service provider makes a difference?

PS, I’m at the show as well. My son has a droid from verizon, the number of available apps is astounding, the internet connection was fast, the bad side for me is the issue of delicate. Not that the phone is, but I need a hardened phone for my work. Been through many, and my Casio GZOne has been durable and sturdy under my conditions. None of the smart phones would make it, for me, but I could get one for the wife and then if I needed internet, I could borrow hers. Neat.

The droid would be my first choice since it offers so much. At least through verizon. And for as long as Verizon allows certain features to be available. Son did extensive research before buying his Droid. Bought on the first day available and he now values it almost more than his apple computer.

All it takes is time, money, physical effort, as in walk, walk, walk, good weather for travel, a place to stay, that is not at the inflated hotel rates on the strip, and a few other items of lesser stature.

You have to love crowds. I have been “RUN OVER” more at this show than any other in the past ten years. Almost knocked to the floor yesterday by a young woman backing up to take a picture. Of course she wasn’t looking.

I just use a Tracphone for calls, and a Peek Pronto for email, SMS and Tweeting. Tracphone limits my radiation exposure by charging me by the minute, but is only 9 cents a minute (double minutes for life deal). Peek is unlimited push email, texting and tweeting (also Facebook integration) for only $9.99 per month (xmas deal), and the unit was only $20.

Have him check out google translate.

Speak in English and it translates and speaks in dozens of different languages.

It’s kind of like the first time you ever see a GPS work, you just say wow.

I carry a mobile information device, that I occasionally use to make a phone call.

Have you ever used a smartphone. A cellphone is about useless to me, I only carried one for emergencies.

Yesterday, the starter broke on my tractor. I went down to the dealer, they wanted $500 for a new one and I would have to wait until monday. I did a search on my phone, got the OEM part number, went to NAPA and got the part for $200, the same day.

While I was in town, I thought about meeting my wife for a movie, pulled out the smart phone, looked at what was playing and changed my mind.

My wife called and said she was running late, could I drop the boy off at a friends house. I put the address in the phone and got turn by turn directions.

I checked my email, listened to some old radioshows and read free-republic all while I was in town doing my chores.

Not for everyone, maybe. Useless, not by a long shot.
