Amnesty for illegal immigration is a very unpopular position, especially during bad economic times.
Screaming “racist” isn't going to convince reasonable people.
Those that would respond to such an argument already think that conservatives are racists by the argument that we oppose socialism because poor minorities might utilize it - thus they do not see us as ideologically against a “free lunch” they think we want poor black and hispanic children to go hungry.
Talking to American about legalizing 10s of millions of illegal aliens when there is double digit unemployment sounds like a winner to me.
A push for immigration reform (i.e. amnesty for Mexicans) may indeed be in the works, and the Democrats may well gain hispanic votes. What they may not be figuring on is the racial animosity between blacks, hispanics, and, to some extent, Asians.
Pitting one part of the base against another isn’t generally a good strategy.
Actually a pretty foolish strategy considering the fact that they failed with their last amnesty push. Things are far worse now than they were then.

The Dims will ram health care through then they will grant amnesty to the 20+ million illegals. Since most immigration is now to get free stuff rather than freedom the Dims know that with the “free” health care the legal illegals will mostly vote for them and ensure they remain in power.
