Amnesty for illegal immigration is a very unpopular position, especially during bad economic times.
Screaming “racist” isn't going to convince reasonable people.
Those that would respond to such an argument already think that conservatives are racists by the argument that we oppose socialism because poor minorities might utilize it - thus they do not see us as ideologically against a “free lunch” they think we want poor black and hispanic children to go hungry.
They aren't after "reasonable people." They want to energize the base, drag in a few left-leaning independents, and above all make sure that 99% African American vote shows up to vote early and often in key districts. With a little help from ACORN with vote fraud where it counts, this is a functional strategy, especially if the loud ranting confusion campaign results in a low turnout on the Right. They know Republican voters eschew confrontation. Make it messy, and the Republicans might stay home again, apparently preferring well-mannered defeat without vulgar emotional displays, to noisy victory.
