I am thinking about getting a double-barreled, side-by-side shotgun 12 gauge shotgun for personal protection. Any recommendations? The government where I live would never approve of a handgun for "personal protection". I also may on occasion us it for bird hunting.

Their RBL model is quite affordable compared to many production european guns. This is a 16 gauge I had them build for me this summer.
Beautiful
I own an L. C. Smith but its nothing like this...
I am a woman who finds beauty in guns.....
You are correct about the stage coach double barrel it is perfect for home defense.
Loaded with the shot size two rounds is all you need. I have one next to my bed.
However the sound of a Remington pump being cycled will put the fear of God into anyone!
I have one of those as well.
I have a 311A 20Ga taken apart on my table as I type.......
It had a stuck firing pin (it’s 40+ years old, and has two notches in the stock.
The problem I’m having is putting it back together!
Exceptional choice.
Nothing says “get the hell out of my house” like charging the pump on a 12 guage......
RLTW
I find CZ to be excellent quality for the price:

Also, if smaller family members are going to use the gun for home defense, look at 20 gage, and spending more on a semi-auto [less kick].
If you still want traditional, look at over/unders as opposed to side by side. Easier for newbies to shoot [sets up sighting like a rifle].
As for bird hunting, gage depends on birds. I usually use a 20 for pheasant, 12 for goose. And bear in mind, most bird guns have longer barrels [not good for maneuvering in a house] than dedicated home defense guns[usually 18” barrel].
Good luck!
Get a 500 Mossberg with a slugster barrel. Remove the magazine plug and you will be ready for anything.

I have a 12ga. Mossberg Maverick. Our local NAPA dealer was selling 9 LED flashlights with a LED laser. I drilled a hole in the flashlight’s screw-off base then used a machine screw to attach it to the tapped hole in the Mossberg’s barrel retaining screw.
Screw the flashlight back on the base under the barrel and use (2) 8” black nylon wire ties, figure-8-ed, to secure the flashlight to the barrel.
Voila! $6.95 flashlight/laser sight combo. If you bump it the laser alignment shifts at bit, but it still hits within 2-4” at the 5 to 10 yard range for home defense.
Good enough for me. I won’t be trying to shoot the gun or knife out of the home invader’ hand. ;-)
The only thing that I would add, is to shoot it a few times to make sure everything holds together. It is sometimes very suprising how quickly accessories work themselves loose from firearms. For about $5 shipping included, you can get a set of “hillbilly wedding rings” direct from China that may also do the trick. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5819
I can also highly recommend their UltraFire WF-502B Cree R2-WC 250-Lumen LED Flashlight. This is an incredibly bright and long lasting light when combined with a rechargeable 18650 Lithium Ion battery. But don't use the rechargeable CR123 batteries with it. They rattle around and are temperamental.
Not true
Home defence is mesured in feet 25 or less.
At that range a shotgun has a pattern measured in inches not feet.
Add in a moving target a bit of excitment and a shotgun is far from a sure thing.
I’ll second your recommendation of a Mossburg 590A1. Great shotgun, good capacity, and very rugged. I’d recommend getting one with the speed feed stock however. I put a side saddle on mine so I’m carrying 10 extra rounds on the gun itself.
Cost on one of these is around $400 or so. Best bet for home defense and it’s even got the evil bayonet lug... LOL
Are you a myth buster? Everyone knows a shotgun will kill every living thing within a ten foot circle at 10 feet. After all, we have seen it on TV. :0)
Those two are $400,000.
My “el Cheapo” rig holds up under firing OK.
However, the hillbilly wedding rings look much better. No dimensions listed on the website, though. My concern is whether or not the split ring will slide between the vented rib and the barrel on the Mossberg.
Any ideas?
