Perhaps they want to keep some of those LORAN sites open for whatever reason...

LORAN is expensive to maintain and operate and it’s outdated.

It's not as expensive to operate as GPS, but it's accuracy is VERY limited by comparison.

Back when I used Loran-c it was only able to put us "in the ballpark" at best. It's accuracy depends on where you are, especially if you're close to one of the base-lines.

Well, they won’t turn the old fashioned kind of land navigation off. ;-)

I simply tried to answer your question. I didn’t write the policy (i.e don’r shoot the messenger).

I have no idea. I just heard of this a couple of days ago and haven't looked into all the ramifications. It seems to be pretty draconian, but who knows? If affects me because my daughter has Crohn's and needs probiotics to help her. If we are cut off, I don't know how to replace them. The food part should interest many here as hormones are required and antibiotics are required. If you believe some of the antibiotic resistance could be coming from treated meat, this could be very damaging.

Also, irradiation caused quite a stir many years ago, and now we get it, and not a peep? I don't think so. If we are going to be importing meat from China, I would think we would want to know more about it. I don't know what the levels of lead will be allowed from the People's Republic, but I don't think I want dog meat substituted for beef and the WHO says it's ok because it's now irradiated.

What is it, that makes you believe the vitamins will be gone? At least we’ve only got a couple of days to find out.

The way I read it, vitamins will be classified as a toxin and regulated by the FDA. You will need a prescription to get government approved drugs. These drugs will have to prove they have value to the FDA. Remember Tryptophan was blocked for human consumption the very week Prozac was released. This tactic was tried in the Clinton years and we squealed so loud, they dropped the idea. This is from a treaty signed at the UN, I think.

If the FDA sees no use for extra vitamin C, then you don't get any. If a doctor thinks C would help, then you get it from a doctor. No more WalMart specials.

I don't know all the particulars about this yet, but if what I read so far is even half true, we are done for. The government will decide what a "food" is and what nutritional value it must have.

There are video's on You Tube and Google gets millions of hits on this, so read away, and see what you think it says. My main concern was I thought I was about as well informed as anyone and I found out about it a couple of days ago. You would think there would be a loud squeal from the vitamin makers anyway, so I don't know what to think.

Copy and paste:

This seems to cover most of it.

Looked like a big ‘IF...’ to me. We’ve only got a few days though, and then we’ll know for sure.

Preexisting infrastructure, tested and proven technology (Since WWII for the US Navy)

Interesting you mention the Navy. I did surface navigation in the Navy for 24 years and not one of the seven ships I was on had a LORAN receiver, even in the pre-GPS days. I saw one once at a radio navigation school I attended in the early '80s, I read about LORAN in training manual and there were questions on it on my advancement exams but I never actual used LORAN.

You mean this on our WWII subs? http://www.maritime.org/radio-das.htm

Google for “APN 4 loran” and then look for the follow on systems, that shouldn't be to hard for you.

I flew a little Cessna 177 (2000 - 2001) that used Loran and I imagine merchant shipping used this technology extensively. But none of this is important. Maybe more in depth and better written I this explains it better: http://www.loran.org/ILAArchive/LanghorneBondPapers/13LoranAndGPSInNavigation.pdf
