Part big budget Hollywood Action/Adventure, part Victorian Period Piece, part Buddy Movie, there is one thing which Sherlock Holmes is not, a screed. The absence of any message beyond the story stood out to me as more memorable than even the fantastic interplay between Downey and Law as Holmes and Watson. While some might argue that the pervasive atmosphere of decay and filth portrayed in Sherlock Holmes might be a negative statement on industrialization, I would argue back that The Good Old Days had manure in the streets.

You know?
Honestly I tend to dislike films where a film stars presence becomes central to the film.
I want to see a film not an actor.

And Brett got Holmes’s hat right. He rarely wore the deerstalker except when out in the country. Wearing one in town would have been a huge faux pas.

From: Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon.
The scene pictured is a favorite of mine because it opens the movie and you don't know until after this meeting, which takes place in a restaurant, that the old bookseller (center) was Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) in disguise.

Holmes, again in disguise, comes face to face with Professor Moriarty:

Peter Cushing, I just ran across a BBC series done in the 1960’s that just came out on DVD with Peter Cushing playing Sherlock Holmes. Haven’t had a chance to watch it yet but Cushing was one of the best actors out there so it has to be very good.

What can I say? He's a great actor. His role in Tropic Thunder was the best comedic performance I have seen since Peter Sellers.

My wife and I saw it yesterday and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Just don’t go expecting to see a new version of the old Sherlock Holmes movies, go expecting to see a new Sherlock movie. A pleasantly unexpected surprise, was that it seemed to leave room for more.

My wife and I saw this film yesterday and really liked it. It was fun, energetic, had a great story and good twists and turns. The sets and costumes (my wife's passion) were wonderful and the interplay between Holmes and Watson was very quick and clever.
This film is much better than Avatar and is a delightful way to spend two and a half hours in the dark with your sweetheart.

"Without A Clue".
A comedy about the idea that Watson was really the brains behind the outfit and Sherlock Holmes was an actor to play the invented personae of Sherlock Holmes.
