You can’t EAT metal. By the time this is over, all the gold in the world won’t be worth a tinker’s damn.

I find the notion that the U.N. would ever even
consider issuing bullion coins
laughable.
If the U.N. were ever to issue any kind of currency, it would be fiat currency, and I'm sure their coins would be made of low-grade plastic, fly-weight aluminum, or perhaps recycled cardboard.
The idea that they would be in favor of empowering the masses by allowing them to own/hoard precious metals is absurd.
The part about the embedded RFID chip does sound plausible, however.

At today’s rates, there is nowhere near enough silver and gold on to replace the number of dollars and euros representing today’s world trade.

Replies seem to be missing the point. Obama/Bernanke/Reid/Pelosi and friends are systematically destroying the value of the dollar, and the world is looking for ways to not go down with the dollar.
The fact is that the dollar will, in the years ahead, continue to drop in value, taking with it the value of dollar denominated assets except for certain hard assets such as precious metals. A one ounce "UN" gold coin would be worth exactly the same as a one ounce gold coin minted by any other country as long as the purity levels were identical.

Producing nations like China would be very angered by a one-to-one currency exchange with us. Such a global currency would go over about as well with such countries as the Copenhagen mess did.
