Knock It Off, Free Republic!
XenoHistoran ^ | 12/1/09 | XenoHistorian

Posted on 12/02/2009 9:21:09 AM PST by pissant

I have been a minor participant at Free Republic, the Internet’s leading conservative forum, since September 2004. An online friend referred me to a discussion where members of Free Republic were talking about the 1952 and 1956 presidential elections, and using my maps from this page to make a point. I had to join FR to introduce myself to that group, and thank them for visiting. Because that was right after the “Rathergate” scandal, I thus became one of the “Pajamahadeen” that had just brought down the Sauronic eye of CBS.

Being a “Freeper” has been an interesting and fun experience, but I am disturbed by a current trend on those boards. For the past few weeks, at least since the latest fundraising drive ended, I have noticed that every new thread begins with a picture or video reminding us that Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate, supports abortion. It doesn’t matter what the topic is, the anti-Mitt material pops up.

Personally, I think our current priorities ought to be making sure President Obama and his leftist pals don’t force their health care plan down our throats, and defeating as many moonbats as possible in next year’s congressional and gubernatorial elections, especially Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Chris Dodd and Slobbering Barney Frank. Then in 2011 or 2012 we can fight over who we want for the presidency. Consequently, yesterday I posted the following on the Kentucky board:

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of the Mitt Romney bashing that goes on at the beginning of each new thread? Granted, he may not be conservative enough for most of us (my first choice for 2012 would probably be Sarah Palin or Duncan Hunter), but he just HAS to be better than the Chicago mob that rules Washington now. Somebody ought to tell Jim Robinson that BHO and his cabal are the real enemy, not Mitt. Sheesh, an outside observer looking at us now is probably getting the impression that Republicans eat their own. And as for Mitt Romney being a Mormon, well, I’m more concerned about Harry Reid’s Mormon faith. Does he HAVE any?

Four replies have appeared since then, and only one agrees with me. The others just said we ought to do whatever we can to make Mitt Romney unelectable. I guess I’m going to take a timeout from Free Republic. Hopefully the Freepers will be acting more sensibly when I return. ’Bye, see you guys next year.

>>>>>... isn’t that what the torches and pitchfork crowd here demand and what the Tea Partyeers have been saying?

Not in my book.

This is all about what is right and what is best for America. Its about principled conservatism and traditionalism trumping liberalism. Not how best to employ political expediency to hoodwink folks into voting for you. Its about how best to achieve limited government, lower taxes and in this specific case, how best to defend and protect the unborn. Its about how best to purge evil liberals from within our own ranks and remove big government socialists from within the federal government.

The last people who are capable of advancing conservatism, are politicos like Romney and Giuliani. The mob is a reflection of democracy. America is a Republic and our federal government is based on elected representatives following the Constitution, not making it up as they go along.

Well, xena explained to me that the information I’ve received re: FR policy was inaccurate. Remains to be seen. BUT...Again, for the 3rd time now, I DON’T CARE! OK?

You've not replied to me..once let alone thrice.

This is NOT worth arguing about. Well, not to me. You head on and knock yourself out.

You are the one who posted first.

You post like that...you can expect replies questioning your reasoning, your opinion, your whatever.

LOL!!

Good luck....you will need it.

That’s part of what I’m talking about, Jim and the mods have a better perspective on a posters history than we do.

I’ve seen posters banned after being repeatedly warned over several months but the thread it happens on seems fairly innocuous and innocent.

Point being, over the years, I’ve seen well-behaved trolls (I know, sounds like an oxymoron, doesn’t it) NOT get banned while disagreeing vehemently. I’ve been here from the beginning.

Although I've only been here a year I've had the same experience. You pretty much have to be an in-your-face jerk or post something *really* over the top to get zotted.

If this weren't true then threads like this one we're on wouldn't happen nearly every day. So many people would get zotted that this kind of dissent wouldn't exist. But it does.

So in real life zotting is mostly based on behavior and *not* viewpoint except for the extremes. And the definition of "extreme" is pretty well understood by the FReeper community and enforced by Jim and his mods.

Sorry. Meant here. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2398540/posts?page=197#197

I see a link to a thread there, but I still haven't seen any proof that there are any cases IN that thread that support the claim about all those people getting zotted just for disagreeing.

Well...it works for them in “lalaland”. But this ain’t Oz OR Kansas. This is conservative country and they probably should just breeze on through to their ‘real’ destination.

As for pissant’s stance, he’s free to leave or stay. His choice. But announcing his reasons for leaving seems a bit petulant to me. I’m disappointed.

What enhanced benefits? Employers are being forced to increase co-pay and deductible amounts, up to double what they were last year. Because of the increased cost to employers, new hires are being sacrificed and raises are being postponed. That doesn't sound like success to me.

At first I thought it was you.

Looks like it is Berosus

I don't know why this would bother many freepers, unless they're mittbots or on dialup.

“Look, lady, can you spell the “Van” in Vanilla?”

Lady Lawyer is describing a condition created by government (mandatory medical treatment) and looking for a solution. The patient, or taxpayers, have to pay for treatment or the hospital get stuck with the tab (which has already some medical facilities to close)

I also think the ridiculous and unfounded damage payments have to be curtailed to make reduce the cost of medical services.

The medical facility and the patient should determine treatment but they presently do so with little regard to cost.... expecting a third party to pay for it. This is another aspect that has to be addressed and I think savings accounts, with the patient making payment, coupled with catastrophic coverage is the best solution.

What I, and many others, want are solutions to these problems and politicians that will fix their mess then let the private sector do what only they do efficiently and effectively.

I’m with you. How the hell are we going to beat the Rats in 2012 with all this infighting? Romney schmomney. I want someone with grit and I don’t care if it’s a RINO or a giraffe at this point. Any Republican stands for what is most important...our national security...fixing our runaway economy......encouraging the growth of the private sector...eliminating Federal spending and bolstering our national defense which includes punishing terrorists...making this country strong and FREE. I’ll vote for that person...not some third party candidate who has a snowball’s chance in hell of winning and serves to spoil it for the GOP.

I’m supporting the notion that politicians can and should change their positions based on the “will” of the people they propose to support.

Really? I wouldn't support that in a minute. It's not a heart change, it's a change for votes! Truly Romney style! And you support that deception - at least, you owned up to it.

Exactly. They’re trying to paint this forum as being as bad or almost as bad as DU. Nothing is further from the truth.

But even conservatives have varying and dissimilar issues which they stand firm on. Those certain issues are not up for debate or wavering on if you really ARE conservative, IMO. Less government interferance and control is the main issue and from what I’ve read and seen, Mitt Romney does not adhere to that criteria. Ergo, the “”bashing””. My question is, since when is posting facts, truths and a candidate’s OWN WORDS considered bashing?

It’s not narrow-minded to hold out for a solid conservative (like Sarah Palin). It’s just good, logical common sense.
