I have been a minor participant at Free Republic, the Internets leading conservative forum, since September 2004. An online friend referred me to a discussion where members of Free Republic were talking about the 1952 and 1956 presidential elections, and using my maps from this page to make a point. I had to join FR to introduce myself to that group, and thank them for visiting. Because that was right after the Rathergate scandal, I thus became one of the Pajamahadeen that had just brought down the Sauronic eye of CBS.
Being a Freeper has been an interesting and fun experience, but I am disturbed by a current trend on those boards. For the past few weeks, at least since the latest fundraising drive ended, I have noticed that every new thread begins with a picture or video reminding us that Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate, supports abortion. It doesnt matter what the topic is, the anti-Mitt material pops up.
Personally, I think our current priorities ought to be making sure President Obama and his leftist pals dont force their health care plan down our throats, and defeating as many moonbats as possible in next years congressional and gubernatorial elections, especially Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Chris Dodd and Slobbering Barney Frank. Then in 2011 or 2012 we can fight over who we want for the presidency. Consequently, yesterday I posted the following on the Kentucky board:
Is anyone else getting sick and tired of the Mitt Romney bashing that goes on at the beginning of each new thread? Granted, he may not be conservative enough for most of us (my first choice for 2012 would probably be Sarah Palin or Duncan Hunter), but he just HAS to be better than the Chicago mob that rules Washington now. Somebody ought to tell Jim Robinson that BHO and his cabal are the real enemy, not Mitt. Sheesh, an outside observer looking at us now is probably getting the impression that Republicans eat their own. And as for Mitt Romney being a Mormon, well, Im more concerned about Harry Reids Mormon faith. Does he HAVE any?
Four replies have appeared since then, and only one agrees with me. The others just said we ought to do whatever we can to make Mitt Romney unelectable. I guess Im going to take a timeout from Free Republic. Hopefully the Freepers will be acting more sensibly when I return. Bye, see you guys next year.
“I truly did not like any of the candidates”
That’s the way I was, hope 2012 has at least two (need a choice) candidates with the wisdom and maturity of Cheney and Rumsfeld (and a strong resume of leadership and accomplishment) and Pres. Reagan (of course), there must be a few left.... hope they answer the call to duty.
Yes, I just "IBTZ"ed Jim Rob's vanity reply, too.
It was nice knowing you folks.

Exactly right. The timing was propitious, was it not?
The trap you have fallen into and the problem Romney and his minions had was in saying that Reagan was like Mitt. Reagan was always against abortion. He made the mistake of loosening the definition for the health of the mother. But, he never became pro choice.
Mitt was for choice 100% and stated women had the absolute “right” to murder their children. Reagan never believed that. But Mitt did not just modify his position. Except for his current belief in embryonic stem cell research, he now claims to be completely pro-life. That’s a 180 degree turn, a from scratch, complete model change, not a modification.
To this day Mitt cannot explain what caused his opinion to change. He cannot even explain why he believes what he believes — a sure sign of someone making a change for expediency. Anyone making that drastic a change, going from completely pro choice/abort to completely pro life and wanting people to believe them, should have some viable reason other than ‘I want to get elected.’
No!
The Romneybots and McCainiacs can all go get bent.
Look, lady, can you spell the “Van” in Vanilla?

The libertarian position is that the government should not intervene. So, while Mitt would have had nothing to do with abortion in his own life — and counseled against abortion in his ecclesiastical positions and got slammed by the Dems for it — he pledged he would not try to change existing law in Mass, which allows abortion.
I was asking a serious and respectful question. I was hoping you would take it that way.
Once you get The Great and General Court of the Commonwealth involved anything the price goes up, the service goes down, and Free Riders still ride free.
No, it was a knee-jerk reaction to something that look seriously zotworthy.
Maybe. But, I think in Massachusetts now more people are insured, and therefore paying their own way, than ever before.
You sound like you don’t like it here at FR. Is there some reason, if so, that you’re still hanging around?
I hope you’re not hoping to change things to suit yourself. Might want to get used to disappointment if that’s the case.
Rockin,
You have been around here long enough to remember where active posters have tried to use FR to promote items that got the Owner upset. We had Arator decide the everyone had better get behind Buchannan, we had people decide that Bush didn’t have to win primaries, we had people decide that FR was going to get behind a first declared candidate, a popular Mayor that was a good leader on 9/11 and not even wait for conservatives to declare — dozens of examples.
Alll JR is doing by posting his threads is saying he isn’t going to let his site be a Rah-Rah site for the less than solid conservative candidates.
As far as standing up to group-think and posters acting like you were an idiot if you didn’t think (1)Flight 700 was taken out by a Clinton orderd missle, (2)Ron Brown was shot on the plane and the plane brought down on purpose, (3) everyone that doesn’t homeschool hates America, (4)Wesley Clarke burned Waco personally or any of the other more iconoclastic positions — well hell, that sort of stuff has been going on for the whole life of the site and you just have to firmly make a sensible case and most of that fades back into proper proportion (Unknown, true with reservations or false with reservations) within a few months.
If you feel you can’t post your flavor of conservative thought here, please post it somewhere. Conservatism is the salvation of our nation.
Wow. I forgot how on board I was with that thread, before it became clear the purge was not a joke.
I should reference my posts to that thread next time one of the mitt-haters calls me a liberal troll who hates conservatives.
And insurance costs for businesses are going through the roof. Romney’s plan is a disaster.
Cool.
300 replies is not enough on this thread.
JR has to to increase the action!
