Emotions run high at a protest over a banner that depicts President Obama as the Joker from Batman. Some call it racist and disrespectful. Others say race has nothing to do with the issue.
The image is stirring up quite a bit of controversy. You can see the large sign is displayed outside of Club Velvet, a gentlemen's club in Richmond.
The banner led to a protest by the NAACP. The organization says the image is not only an attack on the president, but on all men and people of African descent.
"The presence of a black president that has African blood is very troublesome to many in this country," said King Salim Halfani. "They can no longer hide their prejudices."
Not everyone agrees. Some who showed up here say the sign is a reflection of outrage by the American people who are unhappy with President Obama.
"I don't think it's racial at all. I think the administration is a joke and that's the theme behind the picture," said Frank Singleton.
The owner of the club did issue a statement, which in part says, "Anyone who believes this banner is racist is an ignoramus. And just because the president is part black doesn't mean he can't be criticized."
The NAACP says it will continue to express its displeasure with the sign until it comes down.

The Joker is a character in the Batman movie. The Joker is a disfigured sociopathic criminal mastermind. This particular caricature of Barack Obama resembles the makeup the late Heath Ledger used in the film, “The Dark Knight” and has become one that “stuck” and no more. Only in the bizarro world logic of the NAACP is this racist. These over-the-hill goofballs have no other card to play and their act is old.
That is a great graphic though.
You know this Joker graphic accentuates Obama’s dead eyes. They really don’t contain much emotion.
Socialism... it’s not a joke!
Anyone that sees racisim in portraying Obama as the Joker should go check any old Currier & Ives, or watch Spike Lee’s ‘Bamboozled’. The movie is disturbing and thought provoking, to say the least.
Nowhere in the old books or in ‘Bamboozled’ will you see anything resembling the Joker.
Whine, whine. Bitch, bitch. Cry, cry. Buncha freakin babies.
Remember W as Smirky the Chimp and countless other less than respectful depictions? Someone should take all the nasty stuff said and drawn about Bush and shove it in front of these morons from the NAACP. Then ask them what they think was respectful about that, and why didn't they protest that when it came out.
It's a pretty rare occasion thar I find myself in agreement with a strip club owner, but..., just damn!
This needs to be shouted from the rooftops.
