Japanese news reports "fukubuka to ojigi shimashita", or "a deep, deep bow" but avoided any kind of editorialization. I kind of thought he looked rather awkward in international diplomatic culture/protocol affairs as a result of this video from JNN News.

That footage is amazing. Even after the big, deep bow he bobs up and down in a half-dozen mini-bows afterward, as if to make sure there’s no near-equal reciprocation.
