No one can deny his ratings, his influence, his tremendous book success, his ravenously loyal fans, and his impact - yet it's almost as though the rest of the Talk Radio Community doesn't know he exists.

It seems like so many of the big names in talk are "pal-ing" around, referencing each others work, appearing on each others program, yet where is Dr. Savage?

What could be causing this?

It's not like they never mention him (just very rarely), yet when they do... I can almost sense a tone of "dissimal" - like he's not legitimate. Why? Is it just personal, do they all know something we don't?

And his books are so huge, yet where is he on the news, on the cable channels (very rare indeed)? Is he such a loose cannon everyone is afraid of him.

It seems the only time he's in the news is when he gets into trouble - see MSNBC firing, and banning from the UK.

Clearly we have more questions than answers... as we continue to try and uncover the "dirty little secret" (if there is one)

So in closing I turn to you - for your take on 2 key questions about Michael Savage:

1. Is Michael Savage treated...

Because he’s a witty but politically unreliable, manic-depressive BACK STABBER...?

**YEARS** before any other talk show host had the gonads to do so, Savage was calling the enemy who they were, by their **TRUE** name:

Marxists, Communists,Fascists, Red Diaper Doper Babies!

Even now few talk show hosts do an adequate job of properly defining the enemy and using their true names. I stopped listening to Rush, Hannity, etc., because if I hear the expression “radical leftist” one more time I would punch out my radio.

When Atlanta Talk Show Host Neal Boortz advertises the
program line-up for the day, he refers to Savage as
“The Anti-Christ”—he almost spits when he says it.
I always wonder why he’s so nasty about it.

The guy strikes me as bipolar (manic depressive). I’m amazed that he can get listeners at all, but then Glenn Beck is the same way and is hugely popular, the “new” Michael Savage.

Because he tortures his staff in exactly the manner his professors treated him...?

Because he conducts huge parts of his shows pre-recorded broadcast while audibly inebriated?

Because he things that pushing others down = completely unremarkable form of self-promotion...?

Because he’s washed-up, has little class, and probably doesn’t any longer really wish to be a broadcaster...?

He bills himself as a loner, an isolationist, a shunner of people.

Why would anyone bother with him, then?

Maybe because he trash talks all of his competitors?

Because he's certifiable and a real downer to listen to.

I like the guy in small doses. I think his rants against Limbaugh, Beck, and everyone else in talk radio sound sour-grapesish, and don’t further his standing as standalone anti-liberal rebel.

I like that he breaks up his political diatribes with personal anecdotes and life lessons, as well as a smattering of gourmet cooking, etc.

The fact is, each radio personality in conservative talk caters to a different personality. Limbaugh caters to the “I’m so certain of my convictions, I really don’t care what you think” crowd. Hannity caters to the flag-waving already-converted patriots. Beck does a decent job of working the folks who are taking their first steps into libertarianism/conservatism, but still need some convincing. He’s also pretty good at researching and exposing the dirt on his target du-jour. Levin caters to the already hopping-mad.

I think Savage’s appeal comes from the fact that he speaks to the individual rather than the masses perhaps more effectively than the others. Even through the “Even though I’m building a cult of personality, but woe-is-me anyway” persona, I’ve always felt as a listener that he was speaking directly to me rather than the wider audience.

For people who drive a lot or look to the radio as a companion, that’s probably a powerful draw. /shrug

Seldom lets his callers finish their thoughts. As soon as a caller makes a point Savage doesn’t like, he uses it for his next tirade. I tried listening to him for many months, just gave up.

If I want to be depressed, I can just turn on the TV. There is nothing that I have learned from my 4 or so hours over the years listening to MS.

He isn’t cutting edge, he’s just a razor blade to the mind and ears.

He has my vote for “most likely to go on a shooting rampage” of all of the talk radio talent.

“Usually correct but too shrill!”

I say highly cynical. His delivery is rash and brazen.
I can’t hardly stand to listen to the guy.

Boortz supports stuff like gay marriage and labels anyone who does not as a bigot, Doc Savage made his feelings and views known on the matter and they ain’t exactly Boorzian..

Doc got pulled from the local station, he stopped doing 3 hours live and his show was being re-run constantly so I just stopped listening, and of course, Boortz the mo-ron took his place.

Savage is mentally unstable, egomaniacal, rude, and just plain irritating.

I used to listen to him - past tense. Got very tired of the Rush/Hannity/anybody-who-isn't-Wiener bashing. Haven't missed a thing.

He strikes me as a homeless person. Intellectually capable, but emotionally crippled, and I would not want to fall asleep in the same house with him.
