He’s NOT “African American” in the sense that this phrase is normally used in the US. He is not the descendant of people brought here against their will from Africa 200+ years ago, and has no connection whatsoever with them (except that he carefully chose his wife because she actually is “African-American” and he thought this would give him creds).

The child of a foreign graduate student and a white hippie can hardly claim to be in the same league with genuine “African Americans” (as much as I hate that term, because they’re just Americans).
