He’s NOT “African American” in the sense that this phrase is normally used in the US. He is not the descendant of people brought here against their will from Africa 200+ years ago, and has no connection whatsoever with them (except that he carefully chose his wife because she actually is “African-American” and he thought this would give him creds).
The child of a foreign graduate student and a white hippie can hardly claim to be in the same league with genuine “African Americans” (as much as I hate that term, because they’re just Americans).

First of all let me just say that I am sick and tired of this "African American" crap. If the "cradle of civilization" originated in "Africa" as all the new age evolutionists claim then it only stands to reason that we are ALL "African Americans." What gives blacks the right to claim that title for themselves?
Sorry. I am not trying to detract from the topic of this thread. It just frosts me to no end when I see that politically correct term.
