I grew up in a small city in the New York suburbs. My parents scrimped and saved to give us a saner life than in the Bronx.
Unlike most other towns in the county, our area was diverse, with a wealthy population in opulent estates; a middle class group (mine); and a large, low income population, mostly comprised of black residents.
In the 60's, liberal policy makers conceived of forced busing so that deprived kids could enjoy tonier surroundings. The utopians envisioned the dazzling spectacle of ethnic bonding.
At my elementary school, the black kids arrived each day by bus while whites walked or rode bikes. When the kids exited the bus, they looked scared to death, dazed into silence. Walking into school together must have felt like a walk of shame.

I never had one Black kid in any of my schools and graduated in 67. The only big problems we had were being tardy, talking in class, and getting caught without a hall pass. I could not imagine going to a public school today. Heck a lot of us bought our shotguns to school in our cars to go hunting after school in dove season. It was a different world. We even had a class called Americanism vs. Communism telling us of the evils of Marxism. Civics and History taught us about the Constitution and the Founding principles of the USA. Amazing.
White guilt goes way back.
Let me describe my own first experience with it, altho I didn’t recognize it as such at the time.
Midwest city, 1969. I was 12. Middle middle class family. My older brother and I joined the local bicycle club. First meeting we attended they were electing officers for the next year.
The ONLY black guy in the club was elected president unanimously, including our two votes. We didn’t know anybody there, we voted for the black guy because we didn’t want to vote against a black guy.
As it turned out, he was OK in the position, altho I think he was a little embarassed by the unanimity of the vote, including his own and that of both of his (white) opponents.
LOL
I have never felt or suffered from white guilt. Perhaps it is because I grew up with the northeastern black mentality all around me. It doesn’t lend itself to pity or sympathy.
“Baby Boomers are not the problem, communism is the problem”
You said the word that must not be uttered! That is a dead ideology of a dead generation./sarc
Communism is just a intellectual response to Godless atheism.
This article is interesting to me because I grew up in a rural county that was 100% white. I was raised in a Christian family that taught that we were “all God’s children” and equal persons. My first experiences with blacks was at summer church camp.
Just the last few years have I been involved with many blacks (I moved to a larger city 30 years ago). I am a musician in a “black” church! I have been welcomed and loved. No, I didn’t vote for Obama!
I’d love to write more but have to go to work ;-)
I hear ya’, wardaddy!
In other words, the bluebloods and deadbeats voted for authoritarian government.
As for those of us trying to work for a living, well that’s just not fashionable any more...if you don’t have a trust fund or a welfare check, what good are you?
Two reasons:
$1 billion buys a lot of “Yes We Can” bumper stickers.
Folks were stupid and not paying enough attention.
My Dad was a superintendent in NJ, and his district was the one the proponents of forced busing decided to make an example of. He believed in local schools, in strong neighborhoods with strong neighborhood schools, when they (the State Educational bureaucrats) demanded an plan to “remedy school segregation” even though the schools were not segregated, it was the neighborhoods that were segregated — he produced plans that caused the least amount of disruption and busing, yet achieved significantly better racial balance. That was not good enough.
They wanted to make an example. They wanted the racial numbers in each school to exactly match the white/black mix in the district. They began a vicious campaign against him on that and related issues, and he was excoriated in the NYT, pulled before a State Hearing Board and the courts, and they raised candidates in the district school board and used the politics of strident division, hate, slander and fear (of loss of state funding, of penalties) in afterburner-on force. They broke his career, they got their example, and they ruined the district for many years with the fall out of the divisions and the break down of the neighborhood schools.
The district and neighborhood we lived in then was a different district mixed race, our district had some busing but not much. Still, we had vicious race riots, a girl thrown through the plate glass of the school, a kid’s head knocked in with an iron pipe, armed police in the hallways. I went back and did some substitute teaching in that district, I do not perceive any impact their post-the forced integration era. The quality of education is still stridently mediocre. The problems with discipline are not due to race — they are due to broken families. Non-black students from broken families are as bad as the black students from broken families in poor performance as a student and as behavior problems that hobble the learning experience for all.
It’s just that Juneteenthism — what I call the cultural tolerance, celebration and generational conveyance of the bitter spitefulness of that hate-the-whiteman mindset prevalent among American blacks — and the ethos of liberal-Marxist victimology have combined to oppress American blacks with a culture in which single motherhood is far more common, although the breakdown in other racial groups is coming to approach that non-survivable rate of illegitimacy.
White guilt doesn’t explain it all. There was a huge amount of ignorance on who ozero was/is. Plus a willing media who cheerleaded for him and covered up anything that would make ozero objectionable.
Sir, I think you may have answered your own question. Their “white guilt” (not felt by you or me) required they compensate by voting for bho. I refuse to vote for any democrat, regardless of skin color. Based on their actions, democrats are anti-American.
This Robin of Berkeley might be a recovering liberal, but she still has a ways to go, iffen you’re askin’. Her bleeding heart shows when she writes about forced busing: “if you create a nightmare situation for black children by removing them from their neighborhood and their friends, you traumatize them. And if you then turn them loose and give them carte blanche, some will be out for blood.”
So, Robin, if you create a merely-bad-dream situation for black children by leaving them in their neighborhood and among their friends, you, I don’t know..., cauterize them? And if you then turn them loose and give them carte blanche, slightly fewer will be out for blood?”
GUILT from some of our forefathers actions and 60’s-on pubic school indoctrination.
When they've paid enough for it.
and by blaming the schools it excuses PARENTS. as parents, WE are responsible for making sure our kids know which end is up, no matter WHERE they go to school.
i never felt white guilt either. all 4 of my grandparents came off the boat from eastern europe, so my family wasn’t even IN this country and there weren’t any blacks where they came from.
I know exactly what you mean...”I was raised in a Christian family that taught that we were all Gods children and equal persons.” that is why the left does not attack the Muslims for not standing up extremeist muslim Terroist, encourage it radical Koran being taught in America and we have a President that hates the constitution, and American exceptualism...
This is not going to stand, we will not be enslaved by hate or fear, or PC BS!
not to mention that the justices across the land who voted on the various forced busing cases that started all this were actually my grandparents age or older
I’m 51
“When they’ve paid enough for it.”
Ouch! That’s a pretty sobering, but true, answer.
Ah, OK. No, I didn’t know if you or your kids attended any of our fine (*cough*) public schools near the inner-city of Nashville. The one thing I seemed to witness most of all was less that of race, and more than of class. The kids that came from better families, two-parents (even especially the black kids) usually behaved themselves (although some of the spoiled-rotten little $hits would act no different than the thugs).
The kids that hailed from one-parent households were little better than thugs, angry at the world and taking it out on everyone. You’d see their moms show up at school every time their little darlings were hauled into the principal’s office. I mean this was around junior high and these women were in their early 30s, rode hard, put away wet, and they were angry, screaming harridan bitches, screaming at the staff, screaming at teachers, screaming at the principal. Dreadful. You almost felt sorry for the young punks with no daddy around. They’d get dragged out by the neck with their moms now screaming at them, telling them how they’re not better than their absent father (likely either in prison or off with some other honey).
I wondered how many of those young men ended up in prison (or dead) before long. I saw one guy’s pic and profile who was a classmate of mine who was a real thug at the beginning of the school year, but I reached detente with him eventually. He ended up going into the military, had a couple of kids, but is raising them alone. I was stunned when I saw the recent pic, he and I both looked younger than our age at the time (13) in 8th grade. While I still look younger (by quite a bit, 10 years or so) early mid 20s (even at 35), while he looks 45.
