The Senate has the votes to pass a healthcare reform bill including a public option, a key Senate chairman said Tuesday.
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), the chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, said that the Senate "comfortably" has a majority of votes to pass the public plan, and that he believes Democrats can muster 60 votes to break a filibuster.
"I have polled senators, and the vast majority of Democrats maybe approaching 50 support a public option," Harkin said told the liberal "Bill Press Radio Show." "So why shouldn't we have a public option? We have the votes.
"I believe we'll have the 60 votes, now that we have the new senator from Massachusetts, to at least get it on the Senate floor," Harkin later added. "But once we cross that hurdle, we only need 51 votes for the public option. And I believe there are, comfortably, 51 votes for a public option."
The Iowa lawmaker's statements mark a bold claim that Democrats have the votes to pass a health bill in the Senate including the prized public (or "government-run") plan after signs for weeks now that centrist Democrats and virtually all Republicans would not support a bill including the provision.

So, if it passes, how do we sue the fed government?
Make no mistake about it, these traitors are going to force this through.
It doesn’t matter that one to two million people showed up at the White House to protest this arrogant and incompetent theft.
It doesn’t matter that most of the American public doesn’t want any of this.
It doesn’t even matter that they don’t even read the damn thing before voting it into law.
They don’t care what it costs you and they don’t care how much this hurts our country.
Hopefully, this will be the straw that breaks the camels back, leading to it’s swift and certain death.
We're waiting...
Can anyone post footage of that?
probably. we’re screwed.
He keeps smiling and clapping but his face is like, "Why am I smiling?"
If they have them then why havent they brought it to a vote yet?
Because it buys them time to try to turn the Polls around.
Plus they have not finished bribing blue dogs for their votes.
Its been a good bet so far.
Thanks. Darn, I wish I could see that. I really despise that guy.
I read on Obamacrimes.com that 33 U.S. states have filed for “sovereignty” because they worry what is coming down the pike. Although some say if your state sues the Fed Govt for sovereignty rights, the Feds will stop govt monies to that state (I would really, really miss my SSAN check).
Plenty. Texas will probably be first in line to credibly substantiate that states have "standing" in this matter. The Governor and AG have been working on contingency plans since the spending bill passed. Other governors have led in this area, but Texas is financially in the best shape to push the fight and has the most sovernty to lose.
