It was originally reported in the Daily Mail two days ago that up to two million people marched on the U.S. Capitol and then without explanation the Daily Mail adjusted the number down to 1 million.
It is unclear whether the change in the estimate is the Daily Mail succumbing to political pressures because they were being used to reference that fact that upwards of 2 million people were in attendance in Washington.
What is suspicious is the Daily Mail made no mention why the number was changed. and adjusted down. (see story)
Other sources did record the Daily Mail's original report. (see here and here)
2 million people are a significant number because if that number stands it would be larger than other significant Marches on Washington...

so how the heck are we to know what the true numbers are??? Saw yesterday in my local paper (St. Paul Pioneer Press) they FINALLY printed an article about the march- but what irked me is beneath the 2 pics they had, they said “thousands of marchers” when I know damn well it was much more than that...but who has an accurate number?
we know the MSM lie... we know how many of us were there
I’m starting to be sceptical of the 1-2 million number now. I have yet to see pictures of the Mall Area (grass lawn area). If thers a million, the entire Mall Area should be filled up. The only pictures I have seen are side street pictures and the staging area, which does appear full, not the Mall Area
surely someone have taken pictures of the Mall Area to give us a little sense of how many people were there
I saw one blog attribute the 1.7 million to the National Park Service. They ought to know. Wish I’d saved the link.
2 million this time — 4 million next time — and then the election of 2010.
I was on the capital grounds mostly near the Grant memorial and the cement pond. It's difficult to compare this event with, say, the Promise Keepers event because that event did not use the grass in front of the Capital while this event did. I did see people several deep around the entire pool and they were packed in pretty tight on the grassy area in front of the Capital. I didn't really look beyond to see how many were on the grounds of the mall, but they would have had trouble hearing unless a sound system was set up for that area.
Please DO NOT misunderstand my reasons for producing these two videos. If folks want to gather together to let them know that we, like Howard Beal in Network are mad as hell and not going to take it any more , its STILL for the time being anyway a relatively free country so we can do that.
All Im saying here is that, especially in tough economic times, there are more EFFICIENT and EFFECTIVE ways to expend our FINITE RESOURCES.
Its not as much fun as sweating on the Mall but there IS a better and less costly — way to scare hell out of them — and you won’t even have to leave home.

I was at the top of Pensylvania Ave from 9:45am to 2:00pm.
1.) Pennsylvania Ave was packed unlike in other protests.
2.) The protest was allowed all the way up to the back steps of the Capital. Much closer than other protests.
3.) The protestors we not confined to the mall and were spread out side to side on the Capital lawn much more than other protests.
4.) At lines in the 50 person range in length, there were “thousands” of people in line to use one of the 75 Port-O-Lets at any given time.
5.) There were significant numbers of people all the way down the mall. At the height it was 3/4 full.
While 2 million was probably an overstatement I would strongly agree there were more than one million.
The Tea Party was not on the Mall!!! The permits were for a parade up Pennsylvania Avenue and then assembly at the Capitol Lawn. We spilled over onto the Mall, but that’s not where the core of our people were. The people were on Pennsylvania Avenue and the area immediately around the Capitol.
The Park and DC Police estimates just for the 14th street area seem to fall in the 1.2 million range. There would only have had to be 800k more elsewhere for 2 million. I was not there, so I am not going to venture a guess.
14th st was the webcam... I should have made that clear.
I think I heard that the mall area was not to be used? So that any photos there were not representative of the event. Also something about the Univ of IL (some group that does this) had estimated the crowd at 1.7 million range. ?
45,000 bus permits @ 30 passengers per bus = 1.35 million.
I forgot that I had changed threads when I wrote that. Someone stated 45,000 bus permits were issued on another thread entitled “Glenn Beck explains The University of I Cant Remember says 2 million at ( tea party )” and I responded to it. My follow up there was to suggest getting the true number of bus permits and estimate from there.
