Obama Addresses School Children: What Is Your School's Policy?

A controversy has erupted over President Obama’s plan to address your children today in schools all over the U.S. Conservatives have rallied in opposition to the president’s address saying that the president’s agenda may not be one of education or inspiration, but of indoctrination. Those accusations have targeted the “Lesson Plan” that is to accompany the speech, rather than the speech itself.

Following the conservative backlash, the White House issued a statement saying the “Lesson Plan” had been “inartfully worded” and the president and his people began to position the planned speech and lesson plan simply as a call from the president for kids to stay in school and study hard.

Obama is just plain EVIL with a smiley face.

Why so serious, it's just a little socialism ... for now.

Copied directly from the email from the principal (sans the "XXXX"):
I sent out an email yesterday afternoon about how XXXX Middle School is handling the presidential address. No teacher has expressed the intent/desire to show the speech. There will not be a showing of President Obama's speech on Tuesday.

Hey if Obama wants a little help from school children they can reply with this advice, { Read and commit to follow the US Constitution and abide by the intent of the founders as is your reasonable service as the President}.

Alas---but Zero is his own demagogue and above the trivial and outdated ideology of those starchy old slaveowner founders.

My children's school will NOT be viewing the President's speech - the principal (my dh) and the teacher (your truly) unanimously agreed that it was a complete waste of time and (borrowing from another mom I heard on TV) I'm assigning them to figured out their % of the national debt.... how many years they will have to work to pay for it.... and write a 1 page essay on top 3 reasons socialism is bad for our country.

I first called my suburban Pittsburgh district last Wednesday. Spoke w/a secretary...no decision on airing or not airing the speech had been made. I told her, I would call back.

Tried on Thursday (from work) constant busy signal around my constant busy day.

Friday a.m., tried repeatedly...got my District Superintendent (randomly—everyone in the office was answering the phone lines). Here is what was decided:

Tape the speech; review to be made by administration; department heads; teachers at all grade levels; school board members. All of it; part of it; none of it may wind up being used. The large group assembled has to determine how the speech fits into our District’s curriculum.

Then:

If all or any part is to be used; a permission slip will be sent home (5k plus students district wide); an option will STILL be included to opt out (with some format designed to assure those NOT watching will not be singled out; isolated; open to ridicule.

Think of the manpower; resources; and energies being used because of this one man’s ego. And this is one moderate sized school district. Time it across the country...

On the up side; it is his base (liberal union teachers) who have to deal with tall this fallout.

what is your child’s school doing?

Our school is taping the speech and adding a rebuttal from Mrs. Palin, in equal length, at the end for later viewing. Don’t know why the dems are so upset over this.

Just talked to my kids and they didn’t see it.

My son asked about it and what it said. I told him a little bit that I knew, and he said that is stuff all the kids already know. I started reading it, and he said “that’s boring”.

My kids aren’t buying into the whole cult of personality.

CSPAN showed crowd shots
the kids were excited and attentive at first
after a while you could see kids texting and chuckling in the bleachers (I was surprised that the Sec Serv let them have phones and cameras which were everywhere).
probably about the same reception as if the principal or superintendent was giving the same speech

Make sure your kids know the hypocrite he is.

How about some real life critical thinking?

May I suggest your son tackle one of these questions for his “lesson plan”?

1. President and Mrs. Obama have chosen to send their daughters to private school, at a cost of about $29,000 a year for each girl. What choices, if any, should other parents have about where their children go to school and about how to pay for educating their children?

2. Why is it important that the president and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of Congress, or the governor listen to what citizens say, whether in town hall meetings or in any other form of citizen communication? Why is what citizens say important to these elected officials?

3. When elected officials pass laws should they and their staffs also be obliged to follow those same laws or should they be exempt—and in either case, why?

4. If an elected or appointed public official breaks the law what should be done about that?

5. When elected officials publicly make a promise, what should be done if they go back on their word and do something completely different—including the exact opposite of what they said they’d do?

6. President Obama is a big believer in personal responsibility. How does “personal responsibility” apply to elected officials and to citizens, in general?

7. How much control should individual citizens have over their lives versus the amount of control given to government when it comes to things like education, health care, saving and investing for retirement and any other issue?

8. What limits, if any, should there be on freedom of speech, such as on the radio, on TV, on YouTube, in print, in classroom discussions, etc.?

9. What do you think about giving some students special preferences in admitting them to schools or awarding them money or prizes: what guidelines do you suggest?

10. What is the one piece of advice that you would to each of the following groups: Teachers? Principals? Parents? Your fellow students? The American people?
