"No more government cheese."

Enough said. By the way you have a great tagline. It sums it all up.

the dealerships need to sell off the used trade ins so they can pick up the slack from the governments failure to honor their word.

The Cash for Clunkers program created a false market. Now the dealerships that fell for this trap, will suffer the consequences. Those buyers that brought in their clunkers are gone. They were in the market pool when the program began. Now they are down the road with cheap rate cars leaving the dealerships with that many less buyers.

The problem is there is there ARE no trade ins.

750,000 cars were taken off the road, period. Not to be resold, not to be purchased by someone else. They were destroyed.

So lets say you turned in your Ford Explorer with 60,000 miles for a new car. That Ford may have had 100,000+ miles of life left in it with proper maintenance. Well guess what, the government mandated it got destroyed.

A vehicle which would have been used by another family for years with years of life left on it was destroyed because it wasn’t the “right kind of car”. As such the used car market is about to hit a giant price increase because the overwhelming majority of sales in the past 30-60 days have no trade in, they were all destroyed instead.

” No more government cheese. “ .... because the dough ( money ) is running out, and the revenues are low.
Can't borrow and spend forever.

Auto history repeats itself. Some will recall when the usual incentives weren’t sufficient.

When the ‘employee discount’ (for everyone) was given, what was left?

Eventually, all of the gimmicks and sales pitches run out of takers.

This is a double edged sword for the dealerships. Not only is the new car market destabilized, but the used car market. Buyer resistance to the higher priced used cars will drive sales down. This will end up with lower profits for the dealerships.

A side note: Most of the new auto sales involved with this Clunker deal were foreign cars. They should have but a requirement that only domestic manufacturers would be involved in the Clunker program.

The Clunker program will hurt the domestic car manufacturers and their dealerships.
