Senator Schumer’s call for sanctions against Britain is silly and insulting
Telegraph Blogs (U.K.) ^ | August 31, 2009 | Nile Gardiner

Someone needs to remind Charles Schumer that the war of 1812 is over. The senior Senator for New York is ludicrously calling for sanctions against Great Britain over the role of the Labour government in the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi. The New York Daily News quotes Schumer as saying:

“If it is proven that there was a quid pro quo, even though Britain is our friend, there ought to be some sanctions.”

Schumer doesn’t outline exactly what those sanctions might be and his remarks were probably made without any thought or consideration, but his comments are deeply unhelpful and insulting at a time when more than 9,000 British troops are fighting shoulder to shoulder with their American counterparts in Afghanistan, with 210 British soldiers already laying down their lives.

It is also ironic that the Obama administration is considering easing sanctions against Burma, one of the most repressive regimes on the face of the earth, while a key supporter of the President is calling for sanctions against America’s closest ally.

Unless Senator Schumer wants to spark a highly charged transatlantic war of words he would be wise to clarify his remarks and drop his threats against Britain. It would be far more constructive for him to support calls for parliamentary inquiries in the United Kingdom into the Lockerbie bomber scandal, as well as Congressional hearings on Capitol Hill focusing on any interaction between Washington and London and Edinburgh over Megrahi’s release.

Schumer must distinguish between the actions of a hugely unpopular British government and Britain as a nation. The latest YouGov poll shows that two thirds of Britons think the decision to release Megrahi was wrong, and the Prime Minister will face mounting public and political pressure over his role in the issue in the coming weeks.

Sorry, cousins. But you should try living over here for a while. In America, its a long and proud tradition to send the village idiot to the United States Senate...

Sorry, cousins. If you would kindly invade us again, we’d be happy to support your cause. Better a Queen than a corrupt dictator.

Stupid Scots; if theywere going to get away with turning this puke loose on the grounds that he had only weeks to live because of his inoperable cancerous prostate, the least they could have done is REMOVED the prostate to show us!

How long before he realizes that Obama at least tacitly gave approval (or at least didn’t object.)

Anyone that thinks the US didn’t at least get a heads up before this occured is living in la-la land. No way we didn’t know ahead of time this was in the works.

What’s interesting is that Obama didn’t object.

“If it is proven that there was a quid pro quo, even though Britain is our friend, there ought to be some sanctions.”

There are some rumblings that Obama also gave a nod of approval before it was done.

Can we please at least contain this embarrassing bile here to the US?

Dear United Kingdom,

Please forgive us citizens of the US for repeatedly electing these “leaders.” Our public education system is training generation after generation of idiots to be completely apathetic to the governance of our nation. Our media is swooning over policies that are in direct conflict with the ideals that we won independence for.

We are working to do better in honor of brave men that have sacrificed so much in the past 200 years. But it is apparently going to take a while to plug the leaks in this old wooden boat.

Sincerely,

Conservative Citizen of the United States of America

But after he was released, Obama wagged his finger.

Quit the shameless trolling for votes, Chuckie. You couldn’t care LESS about this thug’s release and you know it. You supported his side throughout the Bush years while doing everything in your power to discredit, undermine and compromise the efforts of the US armed forces. The only people you impress with this phony rhetoric are the brain-dead leftists who will vote for you anyhow.

My gut feeling is that Schumer and others know that Obama knew about this upcoming deal and gave non-official approval and now that the heat is inevitably getting hotter Schumer is the go-to guy to fire off a preemptive warning shot. If true this means that when Schumer, Obama and the Dems bluff is called by GB (to cover their butts) it will be an amazingly strong body blow.

This all depends on how arrogant Obama and Co. were of their belief in their power, level of support, etc. since any of this occurred before the August recess free fall.

I agree. I thought it was weird when Schumer complained so loudly so early. Me thinks they (thou) dost protest too much!
