The the real #2 rule is that you NEVER EVER point a gun at anything you don't intend to destroy.

I was taught that that was rule #1.

Rule #1: It's always loaded, even when it's unloaded.
Rule #2: Never point it at anything unless you intend to destroy it.

These came straight out of my concealed carry training. What am I being inconsistent about?
