Tennessee Jury Lets Torturer-Murderer-Rapist Live, to Prey on Others August 28, 12:24
Some juries are indulgent towards even the most vicious and plainly-guilty criminals. A Nashville jury just let a nightmarishly-evil torturer-murderer-rapist, Letalvis Cobbins, escape the death penalty in the rapes, torture, mutilation, and murders of Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian. Now, he can spend the rest of his life raping and preying on vulnerable prison inmates, like first-time offenders.
The jurors who blocked the death penalty may have mistakenly believed that they were sophisticated and progressive by rejecting the death penalty, but in truth, they were being cruel, since, as it says in Midrash, he who is kind to the cruel is cruel to the kind. Scholars like Ernest Van Den Haag have concluded that the death penalty actually saves lives by deterring murders. (A recent Emory University study says that each execution deters approximately 18 murders). When I was a young liberal, I used to oppose the death penalty, in part because I was arrogant and it made me feel morally superior to those who support it based on gut instinct. But gut instincts, such as indignation, are important guides to what is right and wrong. As the great Athenian lawgiver Solon noted, true justice will not be achieved until those who have not been victimized by crime are just as indignant as those who have been.
The horrifying facts of the case are below; if you are squeamish, dont read further. I describe them in order to explain why it is an insult to justice to give a torturer-rapist-murderer like Letalvis Cobbins the same sentence that many ordinary murderers receive:

Christian suffered horrific injuries to her vagina, anus and mouth. She was not only raped but savaged with an object, possibly a broken chair leg, the doctor testified.
Yet the defense attorneys for Letalvis Cobbins, one of the five people who perpetrated these atrocities, think that he can be rehabilitated, and will not pose a risk to others in the future. Do you agree? I dont. If I were a first-time prison inmate, in for something like drug possession, I would be scared to death by this vicious criminals presence.
Some have speculated that the jurors refused to impose the death penalty out of racial favoritism, and that some on the racially-diverse jury may have had difficulty empathizing with the victims, who were white. When a Brooklyn jury acquitted the killer of Yankel Rosenbaum, who died in the 1991 anti-semitic riots in Crown Heights, commentators suggested that race similarly played a role in the black defendant's acquittal, citing the seemingly airtight evidence against defendant Lemrick Nelson, who had been identified by the dying Rosenbaum as his killer. If the race of the victims and perpetrators in this case had been switched, the ensuing media coverage would have dwarfed the Duke Lacrosse case.
The crime didnt happen in Nashville (Davidson County), where the jury was chosen. The case was moved there, rather than to a less pro-defendant venue closer to whether the crime actually occurred, by presiding Judge Richard Baumgartner, a liberal Democrat. His excuse was that the case needed to be moved from Knoxville due to adverse pre-trial publicity; but if so, that merely justified a move, not a move to distant Nashville, 180 miles away. Tennessee voters should ask why Baumgartner did this.
This guy will likely be killed in prison. Not even convicted felons would feel comfortable with this monster; I expect a brief session with a sharp toothbrush is in his immediate future, and it won’t be used to clean his teeth.
Nashville is crazy.
Just imagine what awaits these scum in hell.
Killed in prison?
For raping and torturing a white girl, this guy will be a hero in prison to other black inmates.
Couple this savagery with the monstrous crime that took place at the Dunbar Apartments in Riviera Beach FL, we are looking at the Tutsis butchering their victims in Rwanda. God help us.
If interracial fisticuffs break out, he’d better watch his back.
Yeah, but there are white gangs in the joint, too...
Nice thought, but I am more interested in making sure that such scum does NOT continue to terrorize people. Remember, we end up where we will in the end, but right now I have to live on Earth and I do not want such scum running around.
If the court does not start meting out what they deserve, the citizenry will. I think that it’s coming.
For raping and torturing a white girl, this guy will be a hero in prison to other black inmates."
He didn't commit these horrible crimes because she was white and he was black, he did it because he's ^%$#ing crazy. If I were a black inmate, I wouldn't feel safer because he's a "brother." I don't think he's going to be getting any sort of Black Panther ticker-tape parade in prison.
What happened in Dunbar?
Indeed there are, and he better.
I can see a situation were this creep could have a bounty on his head.
They justified this sentence by realizing the state of Tennessee won’t have to pay millions of dollars for all of the appeals that death row cases bring up and decided a life sentence with no chance of parole was a way to lock this monster up forever without running up a huge tab.
Although, in my opinion, if a case like this doesn’t warrant a death sentence, nothing does.
They should all have been put to death. But I guess when a black person tortures and kills whites, it’s just one of those things.
But black people should think twice before high fiving about this one. What does it say when much of the larger society thinks that this is simply how blacks act...and therefore they shouldn’t be held to the same standards as the rest of us and shouldn’t be punished for it?
Thanks, Al Sharpton. And Jesse. And Obama.
I live in Nashville and it is terrible what happened to these kids. I remember hearing about it on the radio, yet nothing was said in the local media. The Repub mayor of Knoxville was wishy washy on this case and Knoxville feared a race war. I favor the death penalty for this reason...I sincerely hope that nothing but hell awaits these thugs. BTW, Nashville was one of 3 places in TN that went for Obama...we have a bunch of Liberal progressives here.
I always look at these kinder and gentler jurys and wonder how they would feel if they had to sit and look at photos of their son or daughter hacked up and discarded like a piece of trash, after being raped and tortured for days on end. Sentence them to death and turn them over to the family members to carry out the states decree.
“What does it say when much of the larger society thinks that this is simply how blacks act...”
Then why do they get to live in this country? Why do we have to deal with it? Why can’t we simply deport them? I am sick of all of it.
