With Eagles, Vick gets second chance

A remorseful Michael Vick wants a second chance and a fresh start with the Philadelphia Eagles -- and knows he won't be easily forgiven by fans.

"I know I've done some terrible things, made a horrible mistake. Now I want to be part of the solution and not the problem," Vick said Friday, referring to his conviction for his role in running a dogfighting ring

Please tell me since you think dog torturing and killing is a minor thing you don’t have any pets or children.

Anyone that defends what he did and says it’s minor thinks torturing dogs is okay.

SInce you think it’s dandy someone should take you and torture you.

Sorry lover of dog killers but his life was ruined because he is a worthless POS and commited a crime not because of PETA.

And dog killer lover he rejected PETA and is going with the Humane Society and other organizations.

While you worship the dog killer and dream of him I’ll support non dog kilers.

They booed Santa Claus one year and also did the same to Michael Irvin as he was carted off the field with a potential neck injury. NEVER seen that behavior towards an injured player before.

You obviously did not read what I said. I find the willful mistreatment of animals depraved and abhorrent. Did you get that. Animals are animals. Property. PERIOD.
He committed a crime that should not have been a crime. People are free to do with their property as they see fit.

Did you read what I had to say about hunting. I thought I would get grief for that. People who enjoy hunting are sick. They are animal killers. Want to put them in jail. How about meat eater? Are you a vegan? If not you are a hypocrite.

I hope he’s had a real change of heart. I can’t imagine being the kind of person who takes pleasure in torturing animals. If he really HAS changed, he’s going to be feeling remorse the rest of his life and that’s punishment enough. I’m still grateful the Redskins didn’t pick him up, and our office Eagles fan is mortified.

from a falcon fan, the day they traded schaub to the texans I said, “They just traded the wrong guy”..

Michael Vick was exciting when he was in Atlanta but people didn’t pay to see him throw the ball. They paid for that one moment he’d take off and run.

Vick had (has?) one of the strongest arms in the nfl, but arm strength does NOT equate to accuracy and this guy was by no means accurate. He couldn’t hit his receivers down field which is why at the time falcon wr’s could be wide open in the endzone with no one within 10 yards and vick would force the ball to alge crumpler in triple coverage for a 4 yard gain.

The falcons would have been no better than an 8-8 team with him and roddy white would still be operating in obscurity instead of becoming one of the nfl’s elite receivers and the locker room wouldn’t be near big enough to hold his ego.

Perhaps the man is truly contrite, perhaps not. One way to see is to watch how he dresses after the game. He used to come out after the games for his press conference dressed as though he could have been out selling crack on any street corner in anytown, U.S.A. (hat on sideways, cornrows, big t-shirt etc.etc.)

Will he maintain that “thug” exterior or will he dress like a normal human being. THAT will be the way you can tell where he’s headed.

IMHO..

How antisemitic of you to equate the two.

Fine. The Eagles would have signed Chairman Mao or Pol Pot if either met the physical requirements for playing.

I say give the guy a chance.

While there certainly is no legal impediment to Vick playing for the Eagles, there is also no legal impediment those of us that believe that Vick's type animal cruelty is unacceptable to shun the team, and to hope for nothing but the worst from it.

I still would like to know what criminal activity is actually looked down by the NFL. How many people or animals can someone kill and still be allowed to play?

I also have a feeling that if any non-football player was convicted of this type of crime, that said person wouldn't have it so easy in finding a job. Most employers, especially in this economy, will just toss out the application of anyone who commits a serious crime.

My prediction is the Eagles will have record attendance at games and their TV games will be highly rated. I suspect this Vick deal has been polled and focus-grouped already and they found that it will sell. The NFL would never have let him back in otherwise.

Definitely. You really "can buy this type of publicity."

The NFL allows wife-beaters, gang-bangers, drug-pushers, etc back on the field, but somehow, because Vick abused some animals, his return is controversial.

Exactly. What crime does someone have to commit in order to not be an NFL player?

There's a reason why the NFL has become known as the "National Felons League." It is because people like to watch games played by criminals, and the NFL functions accordingly.

One of the funniest signs I have seen in a long time was one held yesterday outside of Eagles training camp (I believe). It said “Hide your Beagle, Vick’s an Eagle”.

McNabb is a much better quarterback. IF the Eagles were smart they’d put Vick at WR or one of the backs.

I agree. McNabb and Vick as quarterbacks are similar in their scambling style. There is a reason Pasqualoni tried - and very nearly succeeded - in recruiting Vick: Syracuse needed a quarterback with similar skills to follow McNabb. But McNabb's role as starting quarterback is secure. The Eagles will find a position other than quarterback for Vick.

You can “pay your debt to society” and still be a worthless POS. Serving time doesn’t necessarily improve your character...usually the opposite. Just another good reason to despise the Iggles....

Slim and none, and Slim left town. The only thing he’s remorseful about is getting caught. At one time he was a millionaire gangsta. Then he was a broke gangsta in jail. Now he’s a broke gangsta out of jail.

Someone told me yesterday that in our country “everyone deserves a second chance”. That’s garbage. If everyone deserves and GETS a second chance, where’s the incentive to be a law abiding citized the first time around?

I’m an eagle’s fan and I think this signing makes no football sense at all. Just stupid and unnecessary. That said...

VICK KILLED DOGS. DOGS. There are several players playing right now (or will next year) who have KILLED HUMAN BEINGS or have been party to murder. I hate to break this to y’all, but that is a far greater offense to me.

I have a dog. I like dogs. But this “outrage” over Vick’s heinous crimes (for which he served nearly 2 yrs where as the drunken Donte Stallworth served 26 DAYS for KILLING A HUMAN BEING) is absurd.

The Eagles backup QB, kevin Kolb hunts wild boar in TX with his dogs. Sometimes, the boars fight the dogs and tear them to shreds. Sometimes his dogs tear up the boar. I’m not clear where the line is here.

My point is, Vick sucks as a QB, the Eagles didn’t need him, the NFL is hypocritical, and this whole phony debate is annoying now.

At one time slaves were property as well. Was it morally right to harm them physically if and when the need arose simply because they were property? Just askin’.

I’m ok with giving Vick a second chance, not because Vick has earned or deserves it, but because Tony Dungy is putting his neck on the line for him. Tony Dungy has always been a class act worthy of respect. With Dungy mentoring Vick, I think Dungy has earned the respect to give Dungy the benefit of the doubt.

People are free to do with their property as they see fit.

Really? Burn down your house for insurance money? Run over somebody with your car? Blast your stereo all night?

Equating human beings with animals?! Instead of just asking you ought to be just thinking. God help you. And I mean that. God help this country. We have totally lost it when I am asked this on a “conservative” site.
Please be consistent. Campaign against hunting, meat eating and the wearing of leather. As I said I think people who enjoy killing animals are depraved. How many of the people who want to see Vick destroyed are avid hunters?

I apologize that my thinking doesn’t meet with your approval. I’ll be as consistent as I effing want to be within the constraints of my belief system and you can do the same.

I do not equate hunting with the willful, inhumane, and sadistic killing of dogs for “sport” and for personal monetary and illegal gain. There is, in my opinion, no moral equivalency. That is my OPINION. I believe the purpose of this forum is to offer and discuss opinions without facetiously questioning the manner in which we do so.

For whatever it’s worth, wilfully taking a life for the purpose of so-called sport is immoral. That’s also my opinion and the way I think. God helping this country has nothing to do with it.

God help you. And I mean that. God help this country.

Well said! As a conservative I believe in personal responsibility and suffering the consequences for vile behavior. But, for crying out loud, most people do turn their lives around when they have to look seriously at their darkest nature. If we don't belive that people can change, then I would expect everyone on the site to keep silent and hang his head in shame.

I believe people CAN and DO change. I do not, however, believe Vick is one of these people. Assuming personal responsibility doesn’t exculpate anyone from the immorality of something they did.
