IPod Help
Vanity | N/A

Posted on 08/12/2009 8:06:36 PM PDT by Antoninus II

My 10 year old daughter has been saving for an MP3 player for a long time. She finally built up a tidy fund to purchase what she wanted. She ended up buying an IPod Touch for over $200! I tried to talk her out of it but her Mom would NOT let me override her decision. Well, she's had it for a couple of months now and she's already managed to password protect herself out. Now she has a $200+ paper weight on the coffee table. I searched the web for ways to bypass and none of it works. Does ANYBODY out there have a way for me to reset this password? I'm using a laptop with Windows Vista (UGH).

Try Swordmaker and see if he has any answers to that, or perhaps one of those on his ping list, perhaps.

But, I suppose your daughter got it at an Apple Store. Whether you did or not, they’ve got great service there, so just walk in, or (if you want) set yourself up an appointment and let one of the “geniuses” there take care of it for her.

I see you have a daughter who knows to buy quality products, so that’s one good thing. The only other thing she needs to do is remember her password, next time... :-)

We got it at WallyWorld. That’s the last place I’d seek tech support.

When I was 10, I had a Philco AM radio, an Underwood manual typewriter, and a wide skirt with a fluffy petticoat to go underneath. I also still played with dolls. I’m sort of dating myself.

You will need to plug your daughter's iPod Touch into the ORIGINAL computer she used when it was first set up. While it's plugged in press both the on/off switch and the Home button for about 10 seconds. Release the On/Off button but keep holding the Home button until iTunes notifies you that it has detected an iPod in "recovery mode." This will force the iPod into a reset mode and allow you to first reset the iPod to a blank as released from Apple condition and then restore your settings, files, and tunes from the backup onto it. If you no longer have that original computer available, then you can still reset the iPod touch back to factory blank... but you will have to reinstall all the music, set the settings, and install apps etc., by hand. you can't do if from a back-up. Once you have done that, re-synch the iPod and all will be well.

Tell your daughter to WRITE down the passcode the next time, or don't use one.

The Apple Store Genius Bar can help you reset it back to factory blank... but they will not be able to restore her stuff. That has to come off of the original computer.

In addition, if she's just had it a couple of months, her iPod touch is still under the one year warranty. If you can't get to an Apple Store, you can arrange for Apple to call YOU for free and help step you through the restoration procedure.

Start here with Apple Support.

I agree that the iPod Touch is too cool. I’m reading this thread on one right now.

Yeah, I wouldn’t expect tech support at WallyWorld, either... LOL...

But, you can expect to get tech support and whatever else, at the Apple Store. You’ve got them all over the place, so you shouldn’t have any problem going to one close by.

I see that a couple of posters have an answer for you anyway. If you don’t like those answers, and you want a *definitive* and sure answer — the Apple Store is going to be it (or you can call Apple Support, too...). I just like going into the Apple Store... :-)

I think I had a Philco clock radio when I was ten. I used to stay up late at night and listen to the Nightowl Show (overnight show hosted by Ben Hunter, later Ron Mccoy) on KFI as late as I could. No politics were allowed, imagine that! Just friendly conversations, recollections about listener’s home towns, etc. The audience was probably all retired people, but I loved it.

When I wasn’t out riding my bike or doing kid things, I was worrying about the Russians bombing us. Oh, and I had the fluffy petticoat, too, that my mom would starch until it stood up by itself, yikes. Can you believe the torturous things girls put themselves through? Uh-oh, thread drift.....
