Steny Hoyer Breaks With the President On Israel
JPOST/The Lid ^ | 8/10/09 | The Lid

Just a day after the House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer penned an op-ed with his boss, Nancy Pelosi telling Americans that disagreeing with the President is unpatriotic, Hoyer turned up in Israel and amazingly he disagreed with the President's one sided, anti-Israel Middle East Policy. It is interesting to point out that Hoyer, a Baptist, showed support for Israel and independence from the POTUS' Middle East strategy, that you would never see coming from the supposedly pro-Israel National Jewish Democratic Council.

While in Israel today Hoyer said that too much attention has been put on the settlements and that Jerusalem should be treated differently than the ones in Judea and Samaria:

Congress represents the people, and there has been no erosion of support in the Congress for Israel, Hoyer said. He pointed to a letter signed by 368 members of the 435-seat House of Representatives, sent to Obama in May, expressing commitment to Israel and saying the US needed to let Israel make its own decisions, and to back those decisions.

"We had no trouble getting those signatures," he said. "I think that is reflective of members of Congress reflecting the views of their constituency."

And Republicans should have been doing far more to point out Obama's uneven policies toward Israel. Not sure they've been doing anything, actually.

Obama is pushing many unpopular policies and not enough is being done to remind the American people. The MSM sure won't do it.

Obviously he is spreading fishy misinformation.

He should be reported to the Czar of fishyness.

Nice maneuver -- Obama sets all this up nicely a back in May with his new policy of crushing the life out of Israel, giving his copartisans in Congress something they can distance themselves from -- in a totally non-binding way -- while voting for the so-called health care so-called reform.

That's true, but it isn't exactly a heap of praise for Hoyer. Notice that he's supposed to meet with Abbas. Wonder if he'll really be as tough with him as he claims he will be. Also notice that Hoyer said nothing about the threat from Iran.

Wonder how many of those 'Rat congressmen going to Israel now find it a very convenient alternative to staying home and holding public forums on their odious health care legislation.

I am as deeply affected by Hoyer’s stand for Israel as I was by Hillary’s when she badly needed the Jewish vote to wrap up her bid for Senator from New York.

Hey, New York Jews: where is your Godess now? Oh, yeah, now that she’s secretary of State, she’s bashing Israel every day.

He’s still the enemy.

Bit like G-d fearing Egyptians -— they still supported pharoah in the end.

My opinion only, but I think support from Israel should be welcomed from dems. And there's nothing in Hoyer's record, or that of many pro-Israel dems, to indicate he's insincere.

I'll accept their support in opposing health care nationalization and cap and trade too, though I suspect it won't be forthcoming. But no sense in beating up on political opponents when they're right.

I don’t disagree that the support should be accepted. I am merely stating what I think is healthy cynicism toward support for Israel from Dems whose support tends toward the politically mercenary, as Hillary’s example shows. The moment it is no longer expedient, Israel is thrown under the bus. And yes, I suspect this expediency even more of Democrats at a time when their party is more and more dominated by the hard left which is clearly anti-Israel, if not actually anti-semitic.
