Bigfoot on the History Channel
August 7, 2009 | Welcome2thejungle

Along with other educational cable stations such as the Military Channel, Nat Geo, and Discovery, I love watching the History Channel. Recently the History Channel has aired a number of programs on the legendary hairly man-like ape often called Bigfoot on a special series called Monster Quest. Some creatures thought to be myth actually do exist such as the Giant Squid. The Gorilla was only discovered and confirmed in the 1800s.

The evidence for the existence of a large primate living in the North American wilderness rests largely with a large number of eyewitness sightings and encounters as well as footprints and even a few videos of the legendary creature.

The most compelling evidence of the creature is the videotape made in 1967 in Northern California by Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin. There is much controversy surrounding this videotape. Some say the Patterson/Gimlin film is simply a man in a costume. Others believe it is in fact a seven foot female specimen (it has noticeable breasts) running through the forest. Even the most talented Hollywood costume designers have stated that if it was a costume, it was brilliantly made and remarkably realistic. Roger Patterson died of cancer in 1972 and on his dying day swore he filmed a real creature and he also had earlier passed a polygraph test with flying colors.

A number a footprints purportedly made by the creature have been examined in great detail by experts. While some are surely phony, others demonstrate a great deal of detail including dermal ridges and scars which would be next to impossible to fake.

Also it is hard to dismiss all of the eyewitnesses and there are thousands of them. They all report the same thing: A large dark hairy ape-like creature standing on two feet with a distinct foul odor.

Of course many scientists will remain unconvinced until a live creature is captured or until a carcass is brought in.

I think there is something out there. The creature has been reported in Indian oral history for centuries and is called Sasquatch. I cannot believe all of the witnesses who have had close encounters are liars and kooks. The witnesses I've seen on the History Channel seem very credible and believable.

If the whole thing is indeed one big fake and a fraud, the fakers are very clever liars and in the case of Roger Patterson, brilliant film makers.

But I keep an open mind and will look at all of the evidence before coming to a definite conclusion

Funny how this creature is so intelligent it can remain hidden to this day yet, the last of the "wild" native Americans were rounded up 100 years ago in the Northwest.

Like a bear, something so large must eat a lot and that requires it to keep moving day and night constantly foraging for food. Such creature if it ever existed would have had it's tracks crossed by hunting dogs long ago and would have wandered not only in front of hunters but also in front of photographers capable of taking clear photos.

The human mind is mysterious. For some, the power of suggestion is such that they will see things they otherwise wouldn't have seen.

Take all the photos of "footprints" ever taken and line them up next to each other. Then ask yourself why the extreme variation from one set to the next?

Because... they're fakes?

Thanks for that. I was hoping to have intelligent discussion on the subject. I do believe there are unusual animals out there which are simply amazing. A nearly 50 foot python was found in Indonesia. Giant squid have only been found recently.

Of course people are subject to laughter and ridicule when they bring these things up much in the same way those who question BHO’s birth certificate are ridiculed and derided.

Oh, I don’t believe that it is impossible for them to exist, I’m just skeptical. I’ve seen all the History/Discovery Channel shows too, but I also live in a very rural area... well I guess we don’t have any Sasquatch around here.

I have often wondered if the ‘siting’ wasn’t a bear on it’s hind legs through some trees. They can make some God awful scary sounds and if you are looking through trees at a really tall hairy creature, you might through your fear see something else.

Not saying that IS it, just a possibility.

Fair enough, but you could say the same thing about cougars, and there’s tens of thousands of those. Yet, they’re almost never seen in the wild. Pictures are rare.

I think there is one clear picture of a cougar somewhere. Maybe even a video.

I used to really like the History Channel, but its stuff like this that is making me look around for other shows to watch. I can’t figure out why the channel is airing such goofy junk.

Yes, I’m skeptical too. But I’m open to whatever evidence might crop up. Seems that most everything “found” turns out to be faked, but that by itself isn’t proof of a negative. Perhaps there is a rare species of North American Ape, or some other species. Beats me. If it’s there, eventually we’ll find one.

You know, that’s a good point and probably the main reason for my post. I normally don’t watch science fiction and have no major fascination for mythical creatures and fantasy.

What will really captured my attention was the sheer number of witnesses who reported seeing it up close. They did not all seem like wild eyed loons to me. They seemed to be very normal and average people. That’s why I kept an open mind. Just could not believe they were all lying.

Yes, of course. But there's tens of thousands of cougar just in this one state (WA). Yet sightings are still fairly rare. That's all I'm saying.

Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization.

There is some REALLY interesting stuf to read in the eyewitnesses reports sections. They go back decades actually.

Not going to comment on whether I believe in it or not. I think these guys do for sure!

Fair enough, but you could say the same thing about cougars, and there’s tens of thousands of those. Yet, they’re almost never seen in the wild. Pictures are rare.

Take for instance the Florida Panther. Back around 1980, there were supposed to be perhaps two dozen living in vast, remote swamps of South Florida yet, biologists were able to keep track of them and show us pictures of them. The paw prints even looked the same from one set to the next. I even saw one about 25 yards from me in Central Florida when my family was down on it's annual hunting trip on a large tract of private land owned by a friend of the family.

For the bigfoot, there's nothing. Nothing but a few blurry photos, stories and footprints that vary so much from one set to the next that there must be multiple species of these critters roaming about the wilds.

Many if not all primitive people have legends of half demons and manimals. Almost always, their purpose is to frighten the people into obedience of some tribal/familial custom. That native Americans had such legends is unremarkable.

Consider this, if environmentalists can shut down large tracts of land to human use based some fish or animal, think what they could do to most of the Northwest if a creature such as a bigfoot could be found. It would be an environmentalists dream come true.

Well, I do know that a the BFRO, they do have a huge number of eye witness sightings. They also do expeditions, and in particular the Olympic Peninsula which in many areas is unpopulated, and they refuse to publish where they are interacting with the animals. They are using night vision, and trying to get recording equipment that works with it. They say that they have direct encounters, but also that they are keeping the locations secret and are doing the best they can to protect the areas as they believe that there is an active population there.

They also say these are very intelligent creature who generally just want to be left alone.

As scary as they are to us, we scare them as well, they recognize our intelligence as well.

So they say.

But, it might be harder to get Barry’s Birth Documents than to find Bigfoot.

“Why wouldn’t the carcass or remains of any one of them have been found?”

Remember how long it took to find Chandra Leavy’s body in Rock Creek Park in DC. It was 100 feet from someones house.

I am an active outdoorsman. I have NEVER seen a bear in the wild. I had until recently never seen an eagle. IF ,IF ,IF (did I say IF) bigfoot does exist their population is so small it is unlikely their remains would ever be found.
However, anthropologists do know that GIGANTAPITHASIST(sp?) did exist but went extict thousands of years ago. All I am saying is MAYBE a few survived.

FWIW, most of the credible bigfoot sighting stories I've heard or read about take place between the Ozarks and the southern Canadian Rockies.

About half of them I can dismiss because the witness was sipping too much moonshine or smoking to much weed, but the other half aren't so easy to dismiss.

(sheepishly stated) I'm enthralled with the whole idea of bigfoot/Sasquatch. I read the bigfoot forums all the time and watch every tv show about them. Is it real or an elaborate hoax? I am unsure but it sure is fun!

Check out all the videos on youtube. There are many serious researchers who post often, but there are also some hilarious hoax videos.

Yes it is interesting. Even if the whole damn thing is one gigantic hoax, what a brilliantly executed hoax it is.

I don’t feel embarrassed bringing up the subject. If it could be discussed on a respectable cable station such as the History Channel, then why not here as well?

I have no emotional capital invested in Bigfoot one way or the other. But it is a fact that strange creatures are being discovered all the time. The great gorillas of Africa were not confirmed until the 19th Century.

FR is no stranger to controversy. It has covered the BHO COLB more in depth than any other website I am aware of. And even “respectable” establishment conservatives say to question BHO’s citizenship status is lunacy. I don’t happen to know where BHO was born myself, but I at least keep an open mind on the subject.

I haven’t caught this much hell on FR since I suggested that Ethel Rosenberg may have been wrongly executed because there was recent exculpatory evidence that her brother, David Greenglass, implicated her in order to spare his own wife, Ruth, who was much more deeply involved in the spy ring than Ethel ever was. A deal was cut. Ethel was electrocuted and Ruth was never punished. Ethel it turns out was a very minor participant in her husband’s spy ring much as Mary Surratt was a very minor and inconsequential bit player in the Lincoln Conspiracy.

These BFRO guys seem to exist to sell weekend camping trips all over North America.
