From TheNewYorkTimes:
Nick Clites, who is in charge of used cars for the dealership, was prepping a 1988 BMW 535IS, with 214,000 miles on the odometer, for its death. He drained the oil, then donned a silky blue protective suit, goggles and gloves and poured a sodium silicate solution into the engine. He revved the car, and within a few seconds, the solution hardened into a glass-like substance, the engine seized up and the car was dead.
Yes, This is an evil program. There is something very diabolical about it.Libertas

Nah, we don’t need a boost to the Mortuary industry. Didn’t you know that’s in the plan to help cut health care costs?
Just out of curiosity, I would be interested to see the income distribution of the people participating in this program. I wonder if anyone is keeping those stats...
It’s this time around’s version of milk being poured down the drain during the depression. Same thing with the idea of razing sections of ‘underpopulated’ cities.
It's not for silver. It's for debt certificates printed out of thin air by a private banking cartel.
This program destroys perfectly good running cars that the poor could actually afford.
How long until people see that the government is nothing but evil?
Audit the fed. Then abolish it. Destroy the lifeblood of tyranny.
$1500 buys one here in San Diego area.
Here’s what a 1988 535is looks like:
I own an old BMW 6-series and am somewhat familiar with the 5 series market. You could get $4500 or more for a nice one with relatively low miles if you can find the right buyer. With the typical wear and tear you won’t get $4500.
These are sad times we live in. Contact your representatives! Let them know how you feel! Email and contact the various Talking heads. In my opinion, the worst part of this C4C deal is the destruction of perfectly good autos! This needs to be hammered for all to see over and over!
They do. It was that cap and trade bill that required you to bring an existing house up to some arbitrary level of environmental compliance before selling it. Last year I sold a house that had parts that were over one century old. How much do you think it would cost to bring it up to compliance?
I'm glad I was able to sell it.
And some people still fly the flag and claim we live in a free country. Wake up, you're a slave. We saw the road to serfdom and said "Time for a road trip".
Cash for enemies of the revolution.
Cash for blasphemers of The One.
I believe you have to own the car for so long (6 months? 12?) before you can turn in your clunker.
It shot up to $4500 for the guy who put the ad in the paper.
Yes I know it hasn’t gotten through the senate yet. That it is even considered in this country indicates just how far into bondage to the state we have gotten ourselves.
You probably can still find one but the price no doubt went up as suply just went down significantly.
Red Barchetta by Rush:
My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about.
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law.
And on Sundays I elude the Eyes,
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits.
If it’s older than 25 years, it doesn’t qualify for the program, so early ‘80s and older cars will be untouched by this lunacy.
No more. Now it's - OMG it's scratched - throw it away and get a new one. Or, YUK it's all dirty (because I'm a lazy POS that didn't take care of it) - throw it away and get a new one. How ironic that this government policy that represents an enormous waste of the earth's resources and energy is now the law of the land, put into place by the same liberals who supposedly are disgusted by wasting resources. Hypocrisy on parade.
Free cars, free houses, free health care... The Santa Claus government marches on.
I'm at the old "Thou shalt not steal" thing. When we take money from our children and give it to people who didn't earn it, that worries me. When we do it to pay them to destroy something of value, I have trouble putting the program in any category milder than "evil". I'm not a big fan of minding outer people's business either, but when it's our children who are paying and a socialist who hates our country and our children who is ordering the waste, I feel that it's time to get involved.
