McCain Aides, RNC Responsible for Palin Legal Bills?

I wonder how much there is to this. Filtering out Newsweek's spin (for example, they claim Palin is "fuming" with no source to back up the claim), one thing is obvious -- Coale is willing to go on the record, while the response comes from the standard-issue "anonymous senior McCain aides" that we see in every Palin hit piece.

It's not my area of expertise, but I believe it to be illegal to funnel campaign contributions to legal defenses for ethical or criminal complaints. You can use campaign funds to pay for other legal fees, but those would only be fees relating directly to the campaign - like personal liability claims or lawsuits filed in furtherance of recounts or the like.

The McCain campaign very well may have led Palin to believe that they would cover her "legal" expenses, but I believe that they would be forbidden, by law, from doing just that.

And, Alaska law (like many other states) may also preclude Palin from transferring or accepting donation that were raised as campaign funds to cover the cost of criminal or ethics defense fees.

Just another Newsweek hit piece. What else is knew. The McCain campaign was the most HORRENDOUS campaign I have ever seen. Sarah was the only one that busted her ass for that campaign. The rest of them could have cared less if they won

Some of them threw the election on purpose.

Some of them threw the election on purpose. Mainly the guy they were working for during the election. Bob Dole had more energy than McRINO in his campaign.

Actually Dole tried hard. Worked himself to a frazzle in the final days. It just wasn’t enough to convince America why a RINO would be better than a RAT.

:

"A political party cannot be all things to all people.
It must represent certain fundamental beliefs
which must not be compromised to political expediency
or simply to swell its numbers."

--  President Ronald Reagan

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party
over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged
to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support.
Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates
wouldn’t make any sense at all.""

--  President Ronald Reagan

Late in October, The American Spectator's The Prowler revealed:
"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers, some of whom are currently working for Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin's bid for the White House,
have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
'Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012,'
says one former Romney aide, now working for McCain-Palin.
'The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney.
He's in charge on November 5th.'"
The Prowler added: "Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a 'diva' and was going off message intentionally."
The Romney supporters in the McCain campaign had access to internal polling which indicated well in advance of the November 4 election that McCain had no chance to win.
So they began working to position their man Mitt for a run in 2012. Just two days after the election,The Palmetto Scoop reported:
"One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"I’m told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palin’s people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romney’s former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
These aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.
Erick Erickson, who organized Operation Leper, said:
"Here’s what I think: I think there are some staffers on the McCain campaign who seriously screwed up the roll out of Sarah Palin, to which Governor Palin herself objected.
These staffers are now out trying to finish her off thinking, as typical D.C. types do, that if they don’t do it to her, she’ll do it to them. They just never understood who Palin is or what she is about."
"Likewise, I do think there are some staffers and others who expect Mitt Romney to run again in 2012,
they decided McCain could not win, and decided to undermine Sarah Palin and her chances hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."

"Who's the Palin Leaker from the McCain Campaign? (Mark Wallace, Romney pimp)
National Review Online The publication of a Vanity Fair profile of Sarah Palin
appears to have opened old wounds in the McCain campaign.
... the source of the “Diva” leak was Nicolle Wallace’s husband."

**We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support.**

Reagan just foretold the McLAME campaign.

McLame was on my CHOICE list just below GOING FISHING .. if McLame runs again.. Fishing WINS by a Landslide
Dunno what to do so far.. Novote for ROMNEY... I could POSSIBLY hold my nose tight enough to vote for Huckster but i’d need VICE GRIPS to squeeze tight enough.

From the article:

...the RNC solicited money for "The McCain/Palin Compliance Fund" - intended to pay for legal costs associated with the campaign, and things like recounts, etc.

The donated cash was never used for that purpose, and the RNC simply absorbed that money into their coffers while letting Palin swing.

"The donated cash was never used for that purpose, and the RNC simply absorbed that money into their coffers while letting Palin swing."

That would make sense and would be the appropriate action for the remaining funds. Again, you can't use campaign-related funds to pay expenses related to the defense of ethics or criminal complaints, even if those "campaign" funds were raised with for the expressed purpose of paying legal fees. Those fees could only be paid if they were directly related to the campaign, ie. recounts, challenges, personal injury liability, copyright infringement, etc. etc.

I should have copied more of the article. Those were not campaign funds. They were specifically for things outside the campaign because McCain could not accept more campaign funds.

I find it hard to believe that Sarah would even consider asking for financial help from the McCain folks. I’d think she wouldn’t want to be beholden to them in ANY way.

"I should have copied more of the article. Those were not campaign funds. They were specifically for things outside the campaign because McCain could not accept more campaign funds."

I read the NYT's piece as well. Those funds that were raised under the banner of "The McCain/Palin Compliance Fund" could only be used for legal or accounting costs that were directly related to the McCain/Palin campaign. If McCain/Palin would have faced legal challenges based on violating campaign finance laws, then those funds could have been used to defend those kinds of claims.

But, what Palin faced/faces were/are claims of ethics violations for her role as Governor for the state of Alaska. As such, a separate legal defense fund(s) would have to be set up and funded entirely separately from her previous Presidential/Vice-presidential campaign finances.

It's a little confusing, but it shouldn't be to people who run large, national parties. I would find it difficult to believe that anyone in the GOP would intimate that the monies raised for "The McCain/Palin Compliance Fund", could be used for anything other than expenses relating directly to the presidential campaign.
