Home burns while Obama fiddles in Rome

While Barack Obama continues his foreign tour in Italy, trouble is brewing on the home front.

His poll numbers are slipping, as Rasmussen reports here, and Gallup does here. The source of the shift is independent voters, particularly in swing states. The numbers are nothing for the White House to fret about, but clearly the president’s shine is beginning to wear off. The main reason for his slump was a depressing jobs report last week that saw unemployment rise to 9.5%. It is soon likely to hit the red letter figure of ten per cent.

The $787 billion stimulus package has yet to take work its way into the system. Critics are emboldened to say that it will never make a major difference; whispers are growing that another round of spending will be necessary.

Health care reform has stalled in the Senate finance committee, where Democrats and Republicans can’t agree on how to pay for expanded coverage. The White House is following the mantra of calm – set by the president – that worked so well in the campaign, but his aides will be looking to him for leadership at home, not abroad over what promises to be a tricky summer.

The minions of the dark side are starting to worry about that little hiccup in the polls. Its probably nothing they say nervously, just an itch, even as the ebola infection spreads trough their system.

Yeah, the talking heads on Fox News for the Dems (Bob Beckel?) was saying “It’s the just independants and they are always the first to switch...” as if it’s ok.
