The F as in Fat study presented by the Trust for Americas Health provided statistical information to show that the nation is becoming more obese. The states were ranked 1 to 50, from the highest percentage of obese people to the lowest. States 51 through 57 were, unfortunately, left out of the study. Sorry, Mr. President.
News broadcasts across the country scolded their respective localities for their gluttony. Rather than simply take the statistics at face value, however, I wanted to see if there is any relationship between the federal governments social welfare programs and obesity, a link between Big Brother and Big Butts, so to speak. What I found proves no causality, of course, and a much more extensive analysis would need to be done to bear out my findings. The findings, however, are provocative.
In the Trust for Americas Health study, the most obese state in the country is Mississippi, followed by Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina, answering the question of why Mark Sanford had to fly all the way to Argentina to sow his oats. The least obeseand presumably the healthieststates are Colorado, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Hawaii. I limited my investigation to these ten states.

Wasn’t Mississippi the fattest?
“America has the world’s fattest poor people.”
~ Laura Ingraham
We laughed so hard when we heard this. The children often ask to hear the “Funny Lady” when we tune in the radio.
If Govt Welfare is the cause, then I’ve got a great solution.
Not that there aren’t other contributing factors, but poorer people tend to eat more carbs and such because they are cheaper.
Yes, my article does indeed give credit to Mississippi for being the fattest.
and poor people who are given food that they need not work for will pack on the pounds. sit and graze on carbs all day, cause you don’t have to work.......there it is.
The cheapest foods are very fattening. Bread, rice, potatoes. They are all starches.
Our poor get enough volume to eat, but it’s a very unhealthy diet that results in obesity.
People in the world’s poorest countries live almost exclusively on rice, manioc, and potatoes—heavy starches. They are not obese. Likely this is because they don’t eat to excess, and they work very hard. I, therefore, don’t buy the “fatty foods” explanation to explain the low-income obese.
Government Welfare Encourages Obesity or so it appearsDelete the 'or so it appears' from the above. And its been this way for over 50 years.
As a kid during the 50's we'd have to drive through 'the slums' (never heard the word Ghetto). I'd see all the Obese 'poor Black women' and wonder how they could get so fat if they didn't have any money for food.
(back then 'Public Aid' or 'Welfare' was handled by The City of Chicago, not the Feds)
Valid points all. Their poor often go hungry, our's do not. It's still not a healthful diet, whether or not they are obese.
It's true their poor work very hard, as there is no safety net, and our's don't. But some of that is also cultural. You won't see our poor walking 3 miles to bring back a jar of water on their heads. You won't see our poor out hunting, because it may not be season, or they don't have a license. And you won't see our poor working the fields, because what is not automated goes to the illegal immigrants that are young and strong and can accept a lower than mininum wage wage.
The prettiest girls in the US are in the South, by far.
Go to virtually any SEC school and take a look. Then go to any Big 10 school, and take a look.
I have not been to any Pac 10 campuses, and I bet it’s not bad, but wouldn’t bet it’d be better than an SEC school.
sit and graze on carbs all day, cause you dont have to work..
Very True....I have a relative on state assistance:
1) Over 400 pounds
2) Eats day and night
3) Free medical every time this person has a ‘tummy’ ache from gorging on food
4) Dines out daily at buffets
5) Blames weight problems on ‘unhappy childhood’
....ladies and gentlemen, our tax dollars at work!!!
They haven’t heard of old, healthy frugal staple food such as beans and rice, falafel and pita, lentil stew and potatoes, hominy and beans and stir fry. Last night, I ate a simple lentil stew that cost about, in ingredients and everything, about 50 cents for an entire bowl. If I had a family, I could feed my family on lentil stew and make a pitcher of sugar free lemonade for them for about maybe 2 dollars for that entire meal.
Most Americans turn their noses on those humble, but very delicious foods because they’re seen as “too exotic”. They would rather eat pizza, fried chicken, french fried potatoes and potato salad than eat simple, humble, low in fat foods such as the foods I mentioned above. (FYI, falafel can be made low fat if you make them into discs instead of balls, you drizzle them in cooking spray and you bake them).
I’m on bennies (Survivors benefits for high functioning autism) but I stretch the money I usually get from the gubment by eschewing traditional American foods. It’s very easy for me to eschew traditional American foods since I don’t eat milk, cheese or eggs.
It makes sense. In order to stay fit and trim in our non-labor intensive culture (I sit in a cube all day), one must PLAN healthy meals and manage time and money intelligently. And if one is capable of such planning (or willing to plan) for the future, then one is unlikely to be poor.
The consequences of stupid and lazy are dire.

The above two desperately poor people are Gloria Nunez and her daughter Angelica Hernandez, who is only 19. NPR says the economy is so bad these two people are having to cut meat out of their diet and skip meals. [NPR Claims Lazy Morbidly Obese Cretin Starving Because of Bad Economy]
There may also be a reverse effect going on here.
Obesity may cause poverty. The obese may have fewer job opportunities and greater health problems.
Studies have tied obesity to viruses, genetics, and medical disorders not just eating habits.
