The New Republic splits from the Obama administration and scolds Barack Obama over his response to the removal of Manuel Zelaya in Honduras. Francisco Toro accuses Obama of “fetishizing” the presidency and ignoring the facts on the ground. The military may have conducted a coup, but it did so at the unanimous behest of the legislature and the Honduran Supreme Court — and for good reason (h/t HA reader Desmond L):

Obama doesn’t care about democracy or the fate of the people of Honduras.
My only problem with this is that the military didn’t “conduct a coup.” If it had, the military would be in charge now, not the civilian government. The military removed him from the country after the Congress and Supreme Court removed him from office.

They won’t slap the Exec-branch down from invalidating the legal documents [contracts] held by the bondholders... or even hear a case questioning Obama’s eligibility (even though to do so would quell a LOT of rumors and at least some unrest).
Just heard from folks in Honduras. There was a big march in Teguc today in support of democracy, i.e. don’t bring Zelaya back, he was against democracy and set himself up against the Constitution. My friends are baffled that the “whole world” (their words) is supporting reinstating Zelaya...they said foreign factories had shut down because of pressure from their home countries which want Zelaya reinstated. Some groups are supporting Zelaya...the Teacher’s Union, for instance, went on strike because Zelaya was deposed (that fact had me seeing huge comparisons between our own political support situation in this country and that in Honduras.)
The author has no idea if that is true in Honduras or not. This is the second second-rate article from Morrissey on this subject. What a hack.
It’s going to be a total mess. The country can’t survive for very long with the kind of economic disruption that is about to be unleashed.
I think he is making an editorial point. I would be very careful in immediately jumping to the idea that those that removed Zelaya are good. In situations like this, they’re usually both bad. I always remember O’Reilly saing that when he covered the war on Nicaragua he found that both the Sandinistas and the rebels were bad. That’s what all the common folks told him. They thought that both sides were variations of evil.
The difference is that one side is allied with Chavez and the other side wants to be allied with us. It’s one thing to say that we should support the new government because they have made enemies with our enemy. It’s quite another to then jump to the conclusion that they are beacon of good. They absolutely subverted due process. He should have been impeached. Removing him through military force is the sort of behavior that thugs engage in. Right now, they are imposing martial law. They’ve cut off broadcast signal. They are forcefully removing news crews. These folks aren’t the beacon of good a lot of you are making them out to be.
You are incorrect. The Supreme Court, Congress, and the military followed their constitutional due process, before, during, and after the ouster of Zelaya.
There are plenty of threads and articles with translations of the pertinent articles of the Honduran Constitution proving that they followed their legitimate due process. The pertinent portions of their constitution are very definitive, and not subject to fuzzy interpretations.

Obama’s crackup is just beginning, right about where we expected, at the sixth month mark. He will free fall to about a 32% popularity (his lunatic base) as sentient beings begin to realize he is just a darn commie.
