THE "REAGAN" DEFICITS OF THE '80'S...WHO IS TO BLAME?
THE FREEDOM POST ^ | 1/6/09 | TheCapitalist

Only after the Republicans gained control of the House in 1994 were there budget surpluses for which Bill Clinton took credit, even though he too had never been a member of Congress. The elder Bush administration and Clinton administration benefited greatly from Reagan's military spending, winning of the "Cold War," and creating a huge peace dividend that made Clinton's budget surpluses possible. Reagan should get at least some of the credit for mid-90's budget surpluses.

I think every President stinks at economics. Sorry if you have to borrow money to run the government then you are doing it wrong. That includes every Republican and Democratic President. I am not impressed with any of them economically.

I agree.

I liked Reagan as much as the next guy. He was a refreshing change from Carter. But those deficits. Congress helped, to be sure.

However, the principles he ran on were 100% correct and the GOP needs to return to those principles

Unfortunately, they really have no choice. We have a debt based monetary system. Every dollar in existence was created from either government or private debt. If there were no debt, there would be no money.

Yep. Tip O’Neill. And the Demoncrats.

They never did keep their promises to cut spending, did they?

And now America is expected to pay and pay and pay and pay and pay.

Demoncrats can reap the whirlwind they have sown.

That is NOT entirely true.

Congress coward out of their fiduciary duty by creating the FED in 1913.

They CAN take that back and run this country with honest money that does not punish the savers. Won’t happen, but they DO HAVE THE POWER BECAUSE IT IS THEIR’S CONSTITUTIONALY!!!

Okay let me one thing! There were never any surpluses during the Clinton Years in office! When you take stuff off budget then it don’t count period! This was a slight of hand by the Clinton administration and Congress! They took money from Social Security put an IOU in there and used that to help balance the budget! The also sold the Elk Hill Oil reserve and some other government property’s but we really didn’t have a surplus. It was better with Republicans in Congress!

Strategic budgetting, running up a deficit on modernizing the US military kept the Dim controlled Congress from initiating new entitlements. The Dims could not resist the military spending in their districts and thus spent the money they might have used elsewhere.

Similarly, the Dims self stimulation bill exploded the deficit this time and now they will be harder pressed to get government health insurance through. The money just is not there.

Reagan had to increase military spending to revamp the military that was allowed to fall into disarray during the Cater years and to build new weapon systems to meet the Soviet/Communist threat.....
If the military were to be kept in top notch shape years before Reagan got in... we would not have had to spend as much to meet the Soviet challenge...

Even with the so called “ Reagan Deficits “ ... the debt was still manageable to pay down .... compared to what we have now with $ 11 Trillion ... and I am not so sure we will ever be able to pay that down...

No, but at least we can (and will) throw the clowns in Congress out every two years. Right now, we have zero control of the Federal Reserve. Bernanke even goes around threatening economic Armageddon if anyone dares to look at his books.

It was worth going into debt to destroy the Soviet Union. Why did we go into debt now? To make a bunch of looters and loafers fat. One removed a great evil the other is making a new one.
