Letterman’s Pathetic Attempt At An Apology
Flopping Aces ^ | 06-15-09 | Curt

David Letterman finally apologizes....albeit a crappy one that has this ridiculous line:

It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.

Yup, big misunderstanding. As Jeri says in the below video, "honest officer, I didn't know she wasn't 18!"

Here is the whole thing:

All right, here - I’ve been thinking about this situation with Governor Palin and her family now for about a week - it was a week ago tonight, and maybe you know about it, maybe you don’t know about it. But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. There’s no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah. But the joke really, in and of itself, can’t be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They’re angry at me because they said, ‘How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?’ And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the Governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani…And I really should have made the joke about Rudy…” (audience applauds) “But I didn’t, and now people are getting angry and they’re saying, ‘Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who’s completely innocent, minding her own business,’ and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there. So she’s now at the ball game and people think that I made the joke about her. And, but still, I’m wondering, ‘Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?’ I’ve never made jokes like this as long as we’ve been on the air, 30 long years, and you can’t really be doing jokes like that. And I understand, of course, why people are upset. I would be upset myself.

“And then I was watching the Jim Lehrer ‘Newshour’ - this commentator, the columnist Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, ‘Oh, boy, now I’m beginning to understand what the problem is here. It’s the perception rather than the intent.’ It doesn’t make any difference what my intent was, it’s the perception. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it’s not a very good joke. And I’m certainly - ” (audience applause) “- thank you. Well, my responsibility - I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.” (audience applauds) “Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.” (audience applause)

Still pathetic, still lame, and the perv should go. The simple fact that he felt it ok to tell a joke about her kids like that is the problem. You don't find it happening about Obama. Nor Biden. The MSM, including these late night shows, are in the tank for the left so they wouldn't dare.

Yeah, but it rhymes with his pathetic attempt at being a human being.

That was a pretty idiotic ‘quip’. He’s a sad sob, imo, Cbs and him are a good fit when it comes to their ‘on air’ faces.

The Reverend Al Sharpton is a fake and a fraud. No comparison between Imus’ comment and Letterman’s.

That he meant the “joke” to be at the expense of the 18 or 19 year-old daughter of a public figure rather than the 14 year-old daughter is small beans. Either way it’s heinous and not comedy by any stretch.

Furthermore, the attack on Sarah Palin and her family that night just went on and on and on. It was a tasteless and, eventually, shocking screed.

Letterman, you are the joke.

(donning flame suit)

I thought it was an apology. Not great but acceptable. LET IT GO. Move on.

I still haven’t heard a full apology for the “slutty airline stewardess” crap and still have not seen a list of ANY OBAMA jokes that were equally perverse, sick, or trashy . . . or, for that manner, ANY OBAMA JOKES. To look at the Obamas and not find anything stupid or trashy about them is to be a total, complete idiot.

To look at Palin’s beauty and find tons of jokes, and then to look at Obama’s wife’s high school picture or ANY picture of her, and not find any humor shows what a worthless comedian he is.

He’s a stinking lefty . . . that sums it up. Almighty Obama and his wife are off limits and will NEVER BE SUBJECT TO THE SLIGHTEST RIDICULE. He should be given the same fate that Imus had . . . fired!

it was a repeat of the first round........I doubt the man is sorry, so he can’t apologize. He is telling us we misunderstood.......he never said he did anything wrong...except he is a victim of a misunderstanding. huge difference between that and flat out saying I made a crass joke at the expense of a child. it referred to an illegal thing...having sex with an underaged girl and I am very ashamed of this. I am sincerely sorry for my actions.

till then he can kiss my grits.......

The above apology is precceded by :

"I saw what happened to Imus, and knowing I am in a more delicate situation that he was, with only 2 late night shows, and 'cuz O'Brien is beating the s**t out of me in the ratings, an I ain't gettin' any younger..."

Letterman should thank his stars that he hasn’t had a coronary or choked on a martini olive while in flight. Those “slutty flight attendants” are trained to save his life.

Letterman is a joke.

First Letterman says:

"There’s no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18."

Sure you did Dave.

Then he totally contradicts himself and says:

"And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that "anybody" was at the ball game except the Governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani…"

Nothing he said in his lengthy BS comment is the truth. He's a lying sack of $hit no matter how you look at it. He deserves everything he gets, and I hope he gets it big...and soon.

Well, Letterman DID add that maybe the joke should have been about A Rod knocking Rudy up, so yah never know. (unless I misunnastood)

Poor innocent, misunderstood, old geezer pervert.

A sick, mind-in-the-gutter, who calls himself a comedian!! A crude, disrespectful excuse for a human being, who gathers up the same type of audience, who thinks he's funny & shows approval with applause!

Don't flight attendants have a spokesperson, who is not outraged by what this stupid ass said about them?

It’s not acceptable to me because he doesn’t mean it. He’s only mouthing words to save his sorry a$$. Saying he’s sorry is easy. Not doing it to begin with is hard for these scumbags. You think he’s learned his lesson? I don’t. So why don’t you tell Sarah Palin to LET IT GO and Move on.

You may be right - but there is no way I watch those so called comedy shows. I'd rather clean toilets!
