The shocking thing about the late-night comics joke about Willow Palin isnt just that he told it, but that he would never have considered doing the same about the daughter of a Democrat.
When I first read about David Lettermans comments about Sarah Palin and her 14-year-old daughter, Willow, I twittered that his remarks were disgusting and sexist. That is still how I feel, and I thought his rebuttal was borderline insulting. After claiming to never have made a joke about raping a 14 year old, which he essentially had, he then invited Sarah to come on his show, which of course she will not. Why would Sarah Palin go on David Letterman as a response to his jokes about her and her daughter? The invitation seems contrived and like the rest of this controversywrapped in political motivation on his part.
Sexist attitudes toward women are nothing new and sadly still commonplace, including on late-night television.
However, there seems to be such an aggressive double standard for Republican women as opposed to Democrat women. Would David Letterman ever make such a joke about President Obamas daughters (or for that matter Al Gores, or substitute another high-profile Democratic politician)? President Obamas daughter Malia is not much younger than Willow, and I am certain that David Letterman would never make a joke about Malia being raped by Eliot Spitzer or refer to the first lady as looking slutty. Why is it funny to make fun of a 14-year-old girl, no matter who her mother is, let alone that of one of the most prominent female politicians in the country?
During the election, one of the things I never got over being shocked by was the sexism the media held toward my mother and Sarah. I recently read an interview in GQ magazine with Jay Leno where he credited some of his success to never letting the public know where his politics lay. I have always respected that about Jay Leno. I have absolutely no idea how he feels about Sarah Palin or President Obama personally, and at the end of the day I dont care. He was always respectful toward me and my family even in the jokes (and he has in the past directed some at me personally during his monologue).
Neither I, nor the rest of the country, go to our late-night comics to hear about their personal politics. That is what Sean Hannity and Rachel Maddow are for. If that was the desired career of these comics, they should have gone into a different field of work. I think the Sarah Palin-David Letterman controversy is just another example of media bias. There seems to be little effort to shield the political leanings of many journalists and comedians anymore. At the end of the day, David Lettermans show is David Lettermans show, but as Jay Leno recently pointed out, by being overtly political either way, you alienate half of the country. As someone who has always been a fan of David Letterman, I have become more and more disappointed and yes, dare I say disgusted about his attitude toward Sarah Palin and her daughters. Is it too much to ask to leave a 14-year-old girl out of a late-night joke? Apparently in todays media, yes it is, especially when it is the daughter of a Republican politician.
Hey, Moon Unit is growing cred!
Could Letterturd be the catalyst that finally turns this train wreck of a country back on track
Meaghan has finally written soemething that makes sense (but her style could use some work).
They've been mollified by the babies they arrange to have slaughtered by abortionists, but they pine for more. Just the other day a registered Democrat who hated Conservatives, Rush Limbaugh, George Bush and a whole host of others grabbed his gun and rushed into the Holocaust Museum to begin shooting people he hated ~ starting with a black building guard, he would have gone on to others imagining them to have been the Jews he believed the President had just now indicated were no longer immune from neonazi and socialist murder and rapine.
Maybe she can begin to understand why it is we were repulsed by her invitations to join with the Leftwingtards.
Let Dave tell the same joke with Sasha or Malia with A-rod,he would be looking for a new job....
Here’s where the Guardian opened the door for Meghan and Bristol to be portrayed as primarily sexual objects by elderly reprobates like Dave Letterman http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2257032/posts
Has A-Rod said anything about him being “joked” about raping a child?
She will probably change her opinion within 3 days... she’s a McCain, that’s just what they do.
Not that i know of and if he is smart he will keep his mouth shut...
He does not want to get involved in this...
It must be the weather...
Well gee, Meghan is getting one right.
good point. where does Dave come off accusing A Rod of something like that? I mean there’s plenty of other stuff to hit him on. Why A Rod and not Jeter. It’s almost like Dave thought he could get away with using Arod. Jeter is much more respected.
In fact, if A Rod wanted some good publicity, he could announce a sizeable donation to some girl’s or women’s harity. He’s loaded and could easily spare say 100K or more.
Even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then.
One of my old tag lines:
If it were not for double standards, the Left would have no standards.
Meghan had no problem going on The View where her parents were treated with total disrespect.
It’s time for Meghan to see the truth about the left.
When his girl friend Kate Hudson heard the joke, she asked A-Rod if she could adopt the baby.
(she's blond)
*ducking*
