As President Obama defends his national security strategy, he faces a daunting challenge. He must convince the country that it is in safe hands despite warnings to the contrary from the right, and at the same time persuade the skeptical left that it is enough to amend his predecessors approach rather than abandon it.
Arguably on the defensive over policy for the first time since taking office, Mr. Obama is gambling that his oratorical powers can reassure the public that bringing terrorism suspects to prisons on American soil will not put the public in danger.
At the same time, he must explain and win support for a nuanced set of positions that fall somewhere between George W. Bush and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Rather than an easily labeled program, Mr. Obama is picking seemingly disparate elements from across the policy continuum banning torture and other harsh interrogation techniques but embracing the endless detention of certain terror suspects without trial, closing the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, but retaining the military commissions held there.

“Arguably on the defensive over policy for the first time since taking office...”
He’d better get used to it.
Well, we’re four months in. 44 months to go. A lot can happen in that time. He will be on the defensive big time in the mid-term elections, as the party in power usually loses seats then. Often the mid-terms are a referendum of sorts on the president.
The Republicans won back Congress in ‘94 when Clinton was president, for example. But, unfortuately, Slick Willie rebounded and easily won re-election. For a time it looked like Clinton was on the ropes after the ‘94 elections. If we can get Obama on the ropes after the ‘10 elections, it could set the stage for a good rebound in ‘12 as he runs for re-election.
But of course nothing can be taken for granted. It’s good news if his halo is off though.
Agree. Just to see certain neighbors & family members sober up would be gratifying.
0bama’s Waterloo?
He made a promise to the left and they don’t sound too happy that he’s not following through. Can he talk his way out of the promise?
His speeches are calculated to run normally at more than 10 minutes, often up to just under 1 hour, i.e., a TV hour-long show sans commercials. Someone somewhere calculated the mm:ss at which point people in the crowd, perhaps varying only slightly by age, start drifting off mentally, answering cell phones, texting, thinking of chores or something else going on, whispering to their neighbors in the crowds, etc. This mm:ss occurs roughly at what would be the 12-15 minute mark, i.e., the 1st commercial break. Note that the break might come earlier, such as after 1.5 music videos for certain crowds.
While HE who shall not be named speaks peace-speak and BDS, complaints and ridicule of American culture, his platitudes are all about understanding and striking a balance until that magic moment when, during the last 10-15 words of a sentence, he describes/lays out his actual position. Rarely does he use a full sentence for this, but when he does, the sentence starts with words he has used several times previously.
By using code and politic buzz word bingo up until that point, he can cloak the actual message at the time most people have stopped listening. He will then draw the crowd back in with an action, moment for applause, drink of water, or other distraction, having used the method speak of quasi-religious rhythm and quieter tones, often softening his voice to such an extent that people don't quite hear his words and their weight, saying to themselves, “What was that?”
By then, like a predator, he has lulled the audience into that place of momentary mental weariness between sleep and wakefulness, relaxation and attention. With the easy smile of the vicious, he can methodically and precisely strike at the jugular of Americans and our values with near imperceptibility, inserting nearly subliminal pronouncements as replacements for all that comprises the core of the US.
And, as with subliminal advertising, the un-Constitutionality and abhorrent positions he espouses pass by much less well-educated people who have forgotten that the video frames with objectionable content, or words used like ‘buy, buy, buy’ were declared illegal years and years ago.
Finally, as with all those who tell the truth only when cornered, he can issue clarifications by surrogates when necessary, shrinking back into the darkness from which he and his loathsome, gangrenous policies are hidden from view.
Nailed it. I am less concerned with Obama than with the blind masses who are willingly duped by the smooth talker. It is surreal to see intelligent adults walk off the plank like this.
Yep.
Yikes! (slaps forehead) I should have first put that image on one of your security threads. ...but I see you’ve been busy with larger issues.
I’m never too busy for you Seadog Bytes.
Good graphic, btw.
...but at this point I can't tell - Either my monitor or my video circuitry is acting up tonight, so I may be having to go do battle with the crowds at Fry's tomorrow... shudder.
I do hope all is well with you and yours!
Be well/Stay safe!
I love Frys...it’s like potato chips...you just can’t eat one.
Whenever we shopped there; we would always we leave with more than we went in there for.
Everything is fine and I’m heading for bed.
Thanks for the ping!

Lol, funny Seadog. THAT would be a frightening experience.
Guess we’re about to do just that.
You’re certainly welcome, Ma’am.
