In his weekly radio address, President Obama took time to commend American fighting forces and to explain how his defense, veterans and even economic programs (which he continues to call the "New Foundation") are part of serving the armed forces.
It might have been superior for the president to have offered only a patriotic message and a word of thanks and remembrance for the fallen soldiers, but that's debatable.
What seems wholly out of place, though, is the president's swipe at his predecessor, George W. Bush, and others:
"Our fighting men and women and the military families who love them embody what is best in America. And we have a responsibility to serve all of them as well as they serve all of us.
And yet, all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve. That is a betrayal of the sacred trust that America has with all who wear and all who have worn the proud uniform of our country."
That is the president's lead in to talking about his military requisitioning plans, veterans' funding and his economic program. It's how Obama often sets things up -- create a straw man opponent to his policies and then attack.
It gets little notice, but even to this day Bush makes calls on wounded veterans at military hospitals, corresponds with families of fallen servicemembers and gives his own money to veterans charities. In office, Bush hugely increased funding for veterans programs and worked relentlessly to improve the lot of ordinary troops.
Bush gets hit pretty hard for the shabby state of things at Walter Reed Hospital that was exposed during his term, but the servicemebers I've talked to know that Bush loves them and takes their well being seriously.
You may feel that Bush is undeserving of that respect because he initiated the Iraq war, but in terms of his respect for and treatment of the men and women in uniform, he is sincere.
President Obama may come to have a similar rapport with the military, but he won't help that by trying to advance his agenda as an alternative to the mistakes made "in recent years."
The Memorial Day weekend message should have been an easy opportunity for the president to talk about the sacrifices and heroism of the current members of the military and how it is part of a 235-year tradition of gallantry and sacrifice. Someone in the White House press office needs to get off the political grind.
I AM LIVID!!
OMgoodness the man is so low rent.
*******
What on earth is he talking about???????? Seems to me zer0 was the one a couple months back who was leaning on vets and current military to require their private insurance to pay for medical treatment that had heretofore been covered due to their service. It's no secret he's the one who will rip existing support out from underneath the military by slashing the DOD budget for eqpt, training and maintenence while feeding the social pork. Just more pathetic lies and doublespeak he won't be called on.
all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve.
TYPTICAL CLASSLESS OBAMA... THE FACTS HE STATES ONLY APPLY TO THE LIBERALS WHO SPIT ON OUR SOLDIERS AND THOSE THAT WOULD NOT FUND THEM IN HARMS WAY.... DEMOCRATS...
Republicans should be on the defensive about comments like that throwing them right back at the idiot liberals but they won’t.

I’ve never thought much of Barack Obama’s policies, and I’m starting not to think much of him as a human being. Today he continued his gratuitous and graceless attacks on his predecessor in the inappropriate context of Memorial Day:
Our fighting men and women - and the military families who love them - embody what is best in America. And we have a responsibility to serve all of them as well as they serve all of us.
And yet, all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve. That is a betrayal of the sacred trust that America has with all who wear - and all who have worn - the proud uniform of our country.
Barack Obama, the soldiers’ friend! As ( Chris Stirewalt) http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/A-t-45870397.html notes:
It gets little notice, but even to this day Bush makes calls on wounded veterans at military hospitals, corresponds with families of fallen service members and gives his own money to veterans charities. It would be interesting to know how much of his own money Barack Obama has given to veterans’ charities over the years. I’d hazard a guess: zero.
Obama’s incessant attacks on the Bush administration tell us nothing about former President Bush, but a great deal about Barack Obama: the man has no class.
I don’t see where he was referring to President Bush.
think he was speaking to his base, the left.
Obama has no idea how I’ve supported the troops or when I’ve supported the troops since I don’t expect to be paid for ‘volunteerism’, nor has he any idea whose memorial I visited today. So explain to me how he can judge the behavior of “we, as a nation”.
This is like listening to an ex-spouse from a bad marriage.
Heh.
Teleprompter failed to mention the planned 10% cut in military budget.
Re Walter Reed: the so-called “controversy” involved ONE outbuilding at WRMC, not the hospital itself, the whole thing concocted by some WaPo beeyotch.
WE need a Republican to come out and say that BO never gives a speech without taking down AMerica and all who came before him. It needs to be said every single day, because every single speech he gives says the same thing. He hates America as it is , yet is so insecure that he has to tear down others in order to make himself appear better.
Seems pretty clear that his entire Presidency will be spent lecturing us on how horrible Bush was.
That’s what happens when you have a small ..............
This crap coming from the man who wanted Vetrans to have to get Medical help for injuries received in combat from Private Insurance Companies.
He would have done it too if not for the American Legion.
POS.
And it was President Bush who wanted the wounded warriers to get their own medical insurance?
Twice now the American Legion has had to come to the aid of our miliatry heroes.
Thank you for your service. Blessings on you and your loved ones.
Do you have a link, because I don’t recall President Bush proposing that?
WTH are you talking about? When?
God has little favor for a slanderous gossip. Obama is in dire trouble, he needs an enemy to blame. This economic disaster has his and his party’s fingerprints all over it and it is becoming more obvious every day. If Obama does not generate a crisis soon, he will end up inheriting his own. As this crisis grows bigger, it gets harder to cover. Pretty soon we will need a nuclear war, world wide famine or a full blown civil war to cover this mess up.
Once this corruption comes to the front and the police work is done, a lot of our present leaders are going to retire to the big House. With Obama’s fingerprints all over Acorn, he is looking at Big Time.
