Seeing the new Star Trek movie last week got me to thinking about parallel universes.
I was once a liberal. Now I am a libertarian-leaning conservative. Having transitioned from one orientation to the other, it occurs to me that liberals and conservatives perceive the world in completely different ways, and subsequently live their lives in different universes, each of which follows a different set of laws.
The laws of my perceptual universe are, to me, as obvious and irrepressible as the laws of physics. I have come to embrace them and in so doing have enjoyed some modicum of personal success. The laws of the liberal universe are no doubt as obvious to liberals, but I would argue that they are not irrepressible because they have failed every time in history that they have been applied. But then, perhaps I am biased.
Here, then, are the laws of my universe and the parallel (liberal) universe as best as I can enumerate them.
The Law of Human Behavior
MY UNIVERSE: People behave in rational, predictable ways.

It's about conservatism/libertarianism vs liberal/socialism.
I read it, I just wasn’t very impressed with it!
It’s a good question, because people do use that to mean a wide variety of things, from Meghan McCain to Ron Paul. And often it does mean kind of “one arm still in la-la land”, or “not willing to admit to being conservative for fear of what my friends will think”.
meaning what, exactly? People trot that out to mean various things. It often means they tried to leave Sodom, but they're looking back. Lot's Wife syndrome.
Without reading the article, I would presume that "libertarian-leaning conservative" is probably someone who supports having a true small government that respects the liberties of the people, lives within its means, and keeps the country safe. Such a person would reject the government's War on Drug Users, any sort of faith-based initiative, and probably have an embrace of some sort of gay union. Such a person would also be very much for having strong border security, a strong military that keeps the country safe, true fiscal conservatism, and a small or non-existant welfare state.
This contrasts with other types of conservatives, many of whom see the government as a vehicle to impose their own personal views onto the people.
Reagan summed it up succinctly: “personal liberty consistent with law and order”.

meaning what, exactly?” ~ pnh102

I agree with your assesment, except that I don’t see any need for Government to have any significant role in marriage. Marraige is a sacrament and is the business of religious organizations. If the Government had any role at all it would simply be in the registering of sacramental unions. The government certainly has NO business redefining words to suit political winds.
thanks for posting.
I always thought liberals were stupid or power hungry tyrants, it is good to know they just exist in an alternative universe.
Glad you liked the post. There are plenty of stupid and tyrannical ones too!
