The Myth of Republican "Narrow-Mindedness" (and Democrat "Open-Mindedness")

We’ve been hearing it for over a week now. Ever since Arlen Specter, the liberal in Republican’s clothing, jumped parties, all we’ve heard from giddy news anchors (aren’t they supposed to be objective?), news analysts, and the late night talk circuit is how narrow-minded those Republicans are. On the other side of the coin, of course, and just as important, is the myth that the Democrat Party is home of open-minded, tolerant, “big tent” folks.

The charges on the Left about the “narrow-mindedness” of the Right get more laughable, considering the FCC has been meeting with left-wing Fairness-Doctrine-supporting groups about how to silence right-wing talk radio. Real open-minded. (Oh, the name of this gaggle of left-wing groups? The “Diversity Committee.” Orwell would be proud.) [...]

But let’s bring this issue a little closer to home. Here’s a little personal anecdotal evidence.

(1) A (politically uncommitted) relative wanted to borrow one of my conservative books (I think it was Mark Levin’s “Liberty and Tyranny.” I wasn’t actually there; my wife relayed the story). Her left-wing husband forbade her to, and so, she did not borrow the book.

(2) A Facebook debate ensued when a friend used her Wall to insult Tea Party participants (an act of liberal/Democrat narrow-mindedness in and of itself, considering I know for a fact this person never met a left-wing rally she didn’t like). When I entered the conversation as the lone Tea Party supporter, this person messaged me privately, asked me not to use her Wall for political discussion (which she failed to acknowledge she started). She then ended our private discussion by writing, quote, “Your point of view simply isn’t enlightening to me.”
