Recently Governor Rick Perry rattled the cages in Washington when he suggested that Texas might at some point be so disgusted with Washingtons repeated violations of the United States Constitution that they might want to secede from the union. It stems from the one amendment to the Constitution that gets the least attention - the Tenth Amendment.
The Tenth Amendment enumerates the rights of the states and the people. Specifically it states that the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Shortly after Virginia ratified the Constitution back in 1788, New York and Rhode Island made similar claims to their ratification document.
On June 26, 1788, Virginias elected delegates met to ratify the Constitution. In their ratification document, they said, The People of Virginia declare and make known that the powers granted under the Constitution being derived from the People of the United States may be resumed by them whensoever the same shall be perverted to their injury or oppression and that every power not granted thereby remains with them and at their will.
The original states made it clear that if the federal government exceeded the delegated rights, they had the right to implement their rights. If every state did not think it had the right to secede, there never would have been a union. Thomas Jefferson said, Whensoever the General Government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force.

You forgot to mention his hair!
We don’t need KBH or her stand on the fence. Make that no fence.
Gov Goodhair used to be a dim too.
There would also be a large migration out of Texas to the USSA by career welfare recipients.
We will have to build a wall bigger than the one that will be built across the Rio Grande to keep from being overun by other Americans trying to get in.
We will force an oath of loyalty to our country and its Constitution, as well as mandated gun ownership.
Texas is great and will prosper mightedly.
Well, I suppose Obama could cite the precedent of the Civil War and the necessity of keeping the Union together as an excuse to send in Federal troops. They need Texas and all those good resources and money too bad to allow Texas to get away from them. Or so it would seem to me.
A Native Tennessean,
Twinkie
Yup, this latest states rights thing of his is total BS on his part. I am absolutely conservative but voted for Kinky in the gov election.
It would be my fondest dream if we seceded. Two sets of my great grandparents came to Texas in covered wagons in the late 1800’s. I was born in Oklahoma, but got back to my roots as soon as I could!
Now that you mention it, has it ever occurred to you that the Liberals approach to life, in a nutshell, is that if everyone can’t prosper, then no one should be allowed to prosper? They seem to take the adage that a chain is a strong as its weakest link to a new level, where stronger links must be made as weak as the weakest link. If you have a chain with its weakest link in the middle and that link gives way the conservative view is you now have two chains, both stronger than the first. The thought never occurs to a liberal think to strengthen that weak link, just weaken the strong links!
That's cover for their real thinking: If you appear to have more or bigger things than they do, you have too much. They look down their noses at those with less and only use them as props to justify taking away your things. They are far from being a Mother Teresa looking out for the poor.
Actually, we have the option of dividing into four more states. 10 Senators, not 8.
Native born son of Texas here, officially recognizing that all Tennessean's are moved to the very front of the line, and grandfathered in, as recognition & appreciation for their heroic contributions to The Republic of Texas.
I love you guys.
don’t worry about federal troops....everyone headed to Texas would block all land, sea, and air for thousands of miles.
Largest convoy in the universe.
Wow...what would be their names?
East Texas, West Texas, Borderstan, Big Texan Burger in Amarillostan, Dallastan?
the Capital would be Texas Steak House...only kidding...or maybe not..I love steak
Paid for with what?
Yea, I like Pennsylvania. More snow and rain. It’s just those damn New Yorkers and New Jerseyians that have made a purple state blue. Bastards.

Not without consent of Congress, per Article IV. Like the Democrats are going to let that happen.
