Best Army Base to live?
Me

Posted on 04/21/2009 6:15:11 PM PDT by foobarred

Wifey and I are moving to a military base. She is going active duty as an Army nurse. We are looking at Ft. Campbell, Ft. Knox and Ft. Bragg.

Can anybody make any recommendations?

Thanks!

We’re thinking of trying for Ft. Carson later in her career. We’ve heard great things about it. For now, we’re hoping for somewhere in the South, but not too oouth. Carson would be too far from where we live right now. I’m keeping my house until the market gets better and I’d like to be able to drive back every once in awhile.

You really don't get to choose that easily.....you have to go where they send you.

I grew up an Army Brat, and I have a few favorites that are in my memories. Ft. Rucker (Mother Rucker) was my favorite post for feeling at home. There is not much to do in the area, but it is not too far from the Gulf Coast.

Ft. Benning is great if you live on post. Another favorite was Patrick Air Force Base in Florida, but it has now closed. The O Club was right on the beach....great memories of that.

There are lots of great posts....just learn to enjoy the area you are sent to for what it is. If you do not like it, remember, you will not live there forever, and every move will be an education. You'll be a better person for the experience.

Landstuhl.

The area is a little on the crowded side, but there is so much to do. The DODDS schools have fewer issues than most U.S. schools.

I’m AF, so I’ve always wanted to avoid being stationed anywhere with “Fort” in the name.

Ive been to Bragg as both a Brat and an Army Wife. Hated it both times. A lot of strip clubs, pawn shops, and crime. Had a police chase actually end in my back yard. My favorite East Coast base would have to be Ft Belvoir, VA. Favorite on the other side is Ft Huachuca (my dad retired and is still there.)

Love Kentucky. Not sure about Ft. Campbell, but I always liked shopping at Ft. Knox, and it is close to Louisville. Good luck. My most favorite base was 29 Palms, California, but it was a Marine Corps base.

Ft. Campbell.
The countryside is gorgeous.
Land Between the Lakes is close by.
40 miles to Nashville.

Ft Sam Houston in San Antonio. Brooke Army Medical Center is a great place.

Since you are in Ohio, you can try Ft Knox.

Since when do you get to choose which base you get orders to?

Since she became a comissioned nurse. All animals are equal, but comissioned medical animals are much more equal than others.

I grew up at Fort Bragg (1974-1978). Hot and humid in the summer...

Generally (I’ll accept that there are likely exceptions), it’s an Army “post” but Navy and Air Force “bases.”

Do you like the Outdoors? Do you like being in a conservative state that loves the militar and has low taxes? If so, Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

I've been out of the Army for a long time, and was not in the medical arts but... I did visit Landstuhl a few times and it was an excellent facility.

If we're wishing for assignments how about: Tripler (Hawaii), Brooks (San Antonio) or Walter Reed.

Personally my favorite assignment was White Sands, but that wasn't a very exciting place for the medical profession.

I heard that it was closed as a military facility a few years ago! I could be wrong, though. It’s a great base. My Dad was Army Corps of Engineers (built all kinds of launch pads, tracking stations, etc.), and we were stationed there when the space race was on. Loved it.
