Take someone emotionally uninvolved with you to see the puppy.
Take someone who has no stake in the decision with you to see the puppy...
The opposite of taking someone emotionally uninvolved with you is taking kids with you...

One day I’ll get an English Springer Spaniel.
When we were looking for a pup, I was thinking of trying to get one that was a few months old, easier to housebreak. I'm at an age when running in and out with a puppy, trying to housebreak it; and, cleaning up after it when it makes mistakes, isn't so attractive anymore. Giving up a couple of months of "cuteness" for an easier time housebreaking seemed like a good deal. But, trying to buy a puppy is really an ordeal anymore -- the breeders make you fill out forms, etc. Anyway, I finally came across a woman whose son was raising corgis as a way to save for his college education. (Now, I think this is admirable, but I had to go around and around with someone about how awful it was before -- not doing it again.)
When we got to the farm, they had two male pups left. This is what I discovered: The woman told me that these pups were the ones that people said didn't have any "personality". What that means is, they are calm. Again, at my age --- calm is a good thing. And my kids at that time were in their mid to late teens, so they didn't need a rambunctious puppy either. So, I have decided that if I ever go for another puppy, I'll ask which ones are the ones that people say don't have any "personality", because that's the one that is calm, and will sit on your lap and be a "lovey".
This does not mean that our little boy doesn't like to play --- he will chase a ball until his little legs shake. But, he is not frenetic and he was trainable.
