This part is frightening:
Dog wardens from the state showed up at Brown's Wolf Den kennel, repeatedly, for inspections.
"I was cited for a piece of kibble on the floor and five strands of dog hair. They took a picture of that, they walked around, snapped pictures and don't tell you why," Brown told the newspaper.

Exactly. After reading descriptions of the behavior problems rescue dogs have, I'd rather start with a blank slate than try to fix the results of someone else's laziness a/o abuse. I can get a puppy through Obedience School. How to get one through "stop THIS behavior and begin THAT behavior" sounds beyond my skills.
My first dog was a shelter collie, who was supposed to be one of two (they wanted them to go together). Of course I paid the full adoption fee for both dogs. They found one of them had cancer while they were spaying her before releasing her to me, so she was euthanized on the table. Do you think there was any mention of refunding the several hundred dollars adoption fee, let alone the spaying charge? Hell no, in fact they tried to bill me for the euthanasia as well.
There’s not a thing you have said that has gone over my head. However, I’ve been debating Animal Rights Activists since old Prodigy BB days (early 1990s), and I realize that there is no changing their minds. If one imagines a dog is the same as a person, of course any sort of breeding is wrong in that person’s mind. However, most of us do know the difference. It doesn’t really matter to me if YOU do or not.
(and if you can’t define a puppy mill you certainly can’t accuse someone of buying a puppy at one).

this is a free country and i will be DANGED if someone is going to tell me where i am to get my dogs. i got mine from a responsible hobby breeder and i couldn’t be happier. i cannot stand this pet-nazi attitude of there is only one way to acquire a dog. you sound as bad as PETA. puppy mills are horrific and wrong and i would never go there, they SHOULD be shut down, but this “get a shelter dog or you are a horrible person” attitude is ridiculous.
Brytlea, this is the US of A and you are entitled to engage in any legal activity for fun or profit, as are the rest of us entitled to procure our dogs from you or other hobby breeders. I am quite sure those who get their dogs from you are grateful for the service you provide. PETA mentality on FR is just insane.

what a sweetie pie! i hadn’t seen that mentality til the other day, maybe because i don’t read every single dog thread, but i was taken aback by it. Whichever poster likened it to eating everything on your plate bc there are starving biafrans did the best job of making the counterpoint, that i have seen.

it seems that same mentality could be applied to humans and we would be proscribed from procreating and all pointed to adoption agencies to fulfill any maternal/paternal instincts that might arise, as well.
